The Modi government just can’t remain out of news cycle. Notice to @DelhiGymkhana is such a provocative move that entire Lyuten’s folks will be furious. The elitism of the Gymkhana can be judged by the fact that the waiting period to get its membership is 25 plus years. Some of those top sarkari babus working in the PMO and in the ministry of Housing and Urban affairs, that issued the notice, may be members of Gymkhana. Only in this government Netas can make the Babus work against their own favourite recreation club. We have rarely seen any government disturbing such elite clubs. Normally, the governments, using laws and its clauses, order demolition of Garib Nagars as it’s happening in Mumbai, currently. Certainly, this bold intent to take over 27 plus acres of land of Gymkhana enjoyed by the current and former powerful groups of ruling class is offbeat. This move will not be opposed by Aam janta, It will take time before the Gymkhana loses land. In land of Mahabharat nobody surrenders land without prolonged litigation. However, knowing the Modi government’s ongoing plans, to build modern offices of the Union ministries and central institutions around India Gate and in its surrounding areas, it’s not difficult to imagine some ministries bland buildings or some public park erected on this land within 10-12 years. The government camp will argue why should merely 1200 plus elites continue enjoying exclusive privileges, almost for free, when the government is facing acute shortage of land for administration? The club doesn’t own the land. Such club can operate in any corner of NCR but the union government offices are required to operate near other existing office clusters. It will be better @DelhiGymkhana surrenders the land. Aap ka time gaya! People should force the government to do great landscaping and transform 27 acres of Gymkhana land into a beautiful green park. Devamritasya Putra - देवामृतस्य पुत्र: 🇮🇳
1948. Kashmir war raging. Soldiers dying for lack of vehicles. India’s High Commissioner to UK, bypassed every protocol and the Finance Ministry. Signed an ₹80 lakh contract for 2,000 refurbished jeeps with a shady UK firm that had just £605 in capital. 65% paid upfront. No inspection. Priced the same as brand-new jeeps from the US. Delivery? Only 155 arrived. All sub-standard junk. Indian Army refused to accept them. None fit for service. A follow-up deal delivered just 49 jeeps in two years - at even higher prices. The case was quietly closed on 30 Sept 1955: “nothing found against anyone.” Mr Commissioner was promoted straight into PM’s cabinet, later Defence Minister. The template was set in 1948: Big defence deal → rules bypassed → junk delivered → zero accountability → promotion. Scams didn’t start yesterday. They started the day after freedom.

The most simple-minded argument people are giving for closing the gymkhana club is that it was an elitist club and commoners were not allowed. Bhai ye kya logic hua, Bukhara in ITC Maurya should close tomorrow because 99% Indians cannot afford a dinner there.
Kiran Bedi@thekiranbedi

This is unfortunate. It is truly tragic. ( Hope the proposal is reconsidered) @arunjaitley got a new pool constructed during his life time. Some of the finest tennis matches have been played here. So much history, so many memories, and generations of sporting excellence are associated with this place. The Delhi Gymkhana Club is not just a property — it is part of our institutional and sporting heritage. Change may be necessary, but history and legacy deserve thoughtful preservation. We can plan to add something new there too… ndtv.com/india-news/del…

K. C. Singh@ambkcsingh

Apropos Union Gov’s decision to destroy #DelhiGymkhanaClub my views: 1. I joined it in 1978/79 (applied in 1974). My father wasn’t a member. 2. Only all-India services & military officers got membership routinely. 3. The club, besides its other services, was famous for its tennis & squash facilities. Famous writer/journalist Khushwant Singh played tennis there till his 90s 4. The elected committees may’ve performed poorly, making gov nominate members. 5. As my old friend @thekiranbedi has opined Del Gym Club is a repository of sporting, services & cultural memories. Destroying it is untenable.

You are really mad! When one hear the video she is exactly making the claim you r denying
Mad Milton@PhilipPanass

@b0red_historian Of course, the snake-mongoose is one extreme but Thapar didn't build on that. Nowhere did she claim them to have been on the throats of one another or being sworn enemies or something like that.

Nice example of sabana quote katerina! As Nityananad showed from original text that Thapar assertion is an academic fraud, one would expect that those who object will also quote original texts and not some third hand source
Mad Milton@PhilipPanass

Thapar lives in your head rent-free. Do you not understand that Patanjali did note the Sramanas and Brahmans to be in an antagonistic relationship; changing the snake-and-mongoose parallel to owl-and-crow would have been technically correct but affected zilch otherwise?! (1/n)

Nityānanda Miśra (मिश्रोपाख्यो नित्यानन्दः)
Romila Thapar’s false claim for 30+ years For more than thirty years, eminent historian Romila Thapar has claimed that Patañjali compared the relationship or conflict between the Brahmanas and the Shramanas to that between the snake and the mongoose. The claim is completely false. Watch to know more.
