Reminder that the only thing you should compete with is what's holding you back. Don't compete with influencers. Don't compete with youtubers. Don't compete with television personalities. You don't need to make every meal/play every game/whatever like there's a camera on you.

@for3verd9eafd @jedicouncilnews Someone once observed that many Star Wars artists try to match characters to how their actors have aged, but Carrie Fisher no longer looked like herself so Leia was apparently immortal. This is the most extreme example of that I've ever seen.

Every CBS show is called something like "POLICECOP," it stars an actor you haven't thought of in 15 years and it gets 75 million viewers per episode.

I have become steadily more convinced that most indie game devs do not understand that "Idle" is an actual word with an actual definition, but instead some sort of graphic games use at semi-random.

@Dexerto Seriously, tho, what this perfectly illustrates is that reddit mods are moderating communities they have no actual interest in or engagement with. The mods aren't even petty tyrant fans, they're just petty tyrants period.

My high school neighbourhood just elected a local 59yo councilwoman who campaigned in the local paper with an AI photo. Her statement: ‘I used an internet program to enhance the image because the resolution of the photo was bad. It’s simply my photo, that really is me. I use medication that’s why I look a bit different now. But yes, I do look much younger than my age. When I’m out with my son people think I’m his girlfriend. I hear that I look super young for my age all the time.’

George Lucas on his original vision for Darth Maul: "At one point, when Obi-Wan kills Darth Maul, he just fell in the pit. I looked at it and thought this isn't going to work because, if people like him enough, they're going to want him to come back and they're going to assume somehow he gets out of it. So I had to cut him in half to say that this guy's gone, he's history, he ain't coming back. I'll come up with another apprentice. The whole issue of having apprentices, poor Darth Sidious trying to replenish his apprentice supply, is one of the main plot points." Should Star Wars have stuck to this original vision?

@south_23rd @girdley It's also the fact that by treating it as essentially a teaching moment, where he points out the difference between Worf's behavior and Riker's, he's helping Worf realize how he needs to act to be a good officer. Difference between correction and reprimand.

The lesson isn't just reminding him who is in charge, but being very specific and direct about the expectations and the best way for his officer to support him. If Data wasn't explicit and clear about the guidelines (and the purpose for them!) it very well could've just devolved into a personality conflict. The lesson here is communication. Not power.

I know this is Star Trek, but it's a great case study in leadership. Every boss eventually needs to have this talk with a senior employee at some point in their career. Sometimes you have to remind people who is in charge.

can someone explain marvel editorial's business strategy of making fans mad on purpose all the time I got into x-men during krakoa and haven't read a marvel comic since they exploded it for no reason, I also don't think I've ever seen a happy spider-man reader in my entire life

@HistoryWJacob Yap like this is usually just either boomers thinking their paper route made them as responsible and tough as a coal miner, or delulu "based" dudes who think they'd have been able to achieve their dream of being a Roman warlord if not for being forced to attend 6th grade.

The concept of "teenager" is a modern invention. For most of human history, a boy of 13 was already a man, apprenticed in a trade or fighting in a war. George Washington was a professional surveyor at 16. Alexander Hamilton managed a trading company at 14. In medieval Europe, noble boys could be pages at 7 and squires by 14. In Rome, a boy put on the "toga of manhood" at 14. The idea that an 18 year-old is "still figuring things out" would have been incomprehensible to our ancestors. I believe this is why we think teenagers are so troubled. They are men and women stuck in a society that treats them as children. Of course they are going to "rebel". We should give them more responsibility and expect much more of them.
