🐾🌈 RPD NATO 🌈🐾 We are very sad to share we have said goodbye to a member of the NFRSA family. RPD NATO served with Devon and Cornwall (D&C) Police as a General Purpose and then Firearm Support Dog, until he retired after a full career to live with handler Andy, and his family. His heartbroken dad Andy described him as “An incredibly strong and powerful dog who had a real presence at work, but at home he was a loving boy who simply wanted to be around you.” RPD Nato, a X GSD/ Malinois, along with 3 of his brothers were procured at 10 weeks old and raised as part of the Devon & Cornwall Puppy Development Programme. From an early age he demonstrated his determination and motivation to work. Known for his very long and agile legs, Nato could outrun most and he hit with a BIG impact… Over his career he helped to locate many suspects and also people who were in need. He was a Mali though and whilst he worked hard, there were plenty of times Andy thought he was hot on the trail of the bad guy when in fact it was a cat or a sheep! His character often fought between the Mali and GSD which made him a challenge on occasion, but also a dream to work with, especially when he was deployed, which he was numerous times, to assist and support firearms incidents. Such was Nato’s quality of work, he represented Devon & Cornwall at Regional, and then went on to the National Trials, a proud day for the force and his handler, Andy. When it came to the day for him to retire, Nato embraced it with enthusiasm and was a loyal and deeply loving family dog, forming a particularly strong bond with Andy’s daughter Millie. He has left a huge hole behind, and will be greatly missed by his devastated family, and all who knew him. Nato was a member of the NFRSA family too, and we were privileged to support him when he needed treatment for an infected cyst in October 2025, and we have been there for his Dad once again, by assisting with his final invoice. Thank you for your service Nato, your job is done.
