@GuillemBalague A quarter of the quarter finalists isn’t too shabby no? I know it means 2/3 of participating English clubs are out, but it shows the depth in the league. Man United are not even one of them. Not sure if it can be counted as demise, especially from a la liga lens (Bilbao / v’real)

If it ends up being just two English clubs left in the #ChampionsLeague, it DOES NOT tell us anything definitive, we don’t have enough evidence to give big conclusions. But that would not stop us, the media, to make a story around it (in Spain they will celebrate the demise of the Premier League, in England they will look for individuals to blame). I said earlier in the campaign that it would be a failure from the PL if there were not three out of four semifinalists as it now generates alone a quarter of all European club revenues. That brings the best professionals and top players for every club, many of them on the bench. It was really a provocation to create a conversation.  Margins are tiny. A missed chance early on, a red card, a chaotic spell… ties swing. Over two games, randomness still plays a huge part. So in my eyes it’s not structural, it is pure context. Having said all that, if it does happen it raises a few questions. When some (not all) English sides can’t impose their usual hight tempo, and specially intensity and aggression, and referees in Europe stamp on too much of that, they sometimes look short of alternative solutions at this level.  In England, the Premier League and Champions League are given almost equal billing by the clubs (I ran a poll and 67% of fans prefer to win the PL). In Spain, the Champions League is the clear priority — and it sometimes shows in line-ups and PL schedule. So here’s the question: if English clubs want to win the Champions League more often, do they need to treat it as more important than the league, even if fans won’t fully buy into that? With success in Europe not quite matching financial dominance, it’s worth asking. But I am convinced the domination of the Premier League will be seen with a bigger sample of seasons

'I am not sure he is offside!' Those were the words of Garry Neville when João Pedro was called offside by the assistant referee. His words are nuanced with the anti-Arsenal sentiments, for your information. If you remember, Sky Sports shut down former Arsenal star, Emanuel Petit, when the Frenchman began calling out the anti-Arsenal agenda. Petit was on the verge of saying how most people want Arsenal to fail when he was shut down. But he was not speaking nonsense. Garry Neville knew very well that Pedro was offside but his anti-Arsenal bias took the better side of him, held him by grip, took him under control and exposed itself. Neville hoped that Pedro was onside. He wished he were onside. He wanted him to be on the green side. The former Manchester United man wanted a Chelsea equaliser so badly. He wanted Arsenal to drop points so much so that he had to lie to himself that Pedro was onside. That is why he said the above words. They were his wishful thinking. Emanuel Petit was cut off, or interrupted when he was calling out what is wrong about punditry when it comes to talking about Arsenal games. It seems obvious that anti-Arsenal rhetoric has been commodified into a marketable and profitable product in mainstream football broadcast, and it will not stop soon. It sells for media houses. It is a rage bait.

Look, all managers have a presentability bias. They are under so much pressure to win that if something looks like it worked even though it actually didn't and it is just luck, they will repeat until they realize it. This is what is happening to Mikel and his team selections.

So to defend City fans, the whole empty seats debate is always an easy stick to beat a team with. BUT, City is not a London team, or a historical big team with a big global fanbase, so you dont have the 'tourist' sale as such to fill seats. Its a local club, primarily local fans. Add that to City fans fury at ticket changes at the club, so a passive boycott, and match fatigue on costs in an period where mr/mrs average is going through a cost of living crisis, just end up being a lot of empty seats. Not making excuses for fanbase, just pointing out rationals! And no your new signing should not be allowed to play in the final !

Thank you Sydney x Dear Sydney, What a week to introduce myself I’m just back after my first week on air in Sydney. Next year my show goes national, and I thought I take a week out of our Christmas holidays to come say hello. So last Sunday the team and I flew up with a full week planned Then Bondi happened. That Sunday night sitting alone in my Airbnb I wondered do I even go on air tomorrow? I went on anyway hoping that I might be able to help in some small way. I’m so glad I did. That first morning in the unbearable unbearableness it all, I offered to put messages of hope on the billboards we planned to give away that week. A listener called Shane said Christian keep it simple and say; “Good on ya, Ahmed” That’s when I knew I was meant to be here. and then you let me in. In the middle of your grief, shock and heartbreak, you kindly welcomed a stranger into your mornings. Some of you had doubts, why wouldn’t you, but you still gave me a chance. You trusted me with your sadness. You let me sit with you while you cried and grieved. And when the moment was right, you let me make you laugh through the darkness. Another amazing listener Brad wrote to me sharing his experience with his wife donating blood in Parramatta. How the queues stretched outside for an hour and a half. In that line with Arabic families, Indian families, Korean families, Aussie tradies, young women in active wear and executives. An elderly Jewish couple who couldn’t donate at Bondi had driven across the city to try again. A police officer waited quietly and when Brad asked how he was travelling, he said softly the Rabbi who died was our chaplain. when that officer was told he’d have to return at 7 am the next day he simply replied no problem. See you then. Brad’s last line was; “everyone was waiting to be part of the solution” I came to Sydney to introduce myself but what happened was Sydney introduced itself to me, sharing your kindness, heart and beauty. I came here a stranger and I feel like I’ve made new friends. I cannot wait to see you all in 2026 In love and thanks Christian x

Now players like Madueke and Gyokeres are back and we’re integrating a few new attackers and partnerships but without that safety blanket of Saliba AND Gabriel behind (and we have lost both of them simultaneously for very difficult games like Chelsea and Villa away). And that, imo, is a much, much bigger reason for drop off in performances than anything else.

I think it’s definitely valid to look at the ‘psychological’ aspect of Arsenal in the title race and I think Saturday was the first time I’ve genuinely detected anything like ‘the jitters’ in 2.5 years (personally think the opponent was likely a part of that). But obviously as fans we are all very desperate and jittery (justifiably so) and that’s an energy the team will have to deal with.

@OC Christian, I’m an expat too. When at Xfm you were the soundtrack to my uni days (appeared on your show once), and now I’m also a similar vintage with two girls living in Aus and you’re once again the soundtrack to my life, albeit now during the school run routine 🙂

Today marks 27 years of doing breakfast radio That's 27 years of getting up in the dark and 27 years of playing Nickelback #blessed When I started, I was 25 — full of nerves, Dr Pepper (it was the 90s, used to chug cans of the stuff during the show!), and a fierce desire to make something good. I wasn’t good, I was awful at times. But thanks to the unwavering support and occasional kick up the backside from my mythical and magnificent wife (each name ‘Sarah”, I backed myself and saw the wonky start as me serving an apprenticeship. 27 years on, I’m still serving that apprenticeship. Now I'm 52, free from my dirty Dr Pepper addiction, (25 yrs clean) and the fire’s still burning with a deep love for what I do and who I do it with, thats my team and my co-creators everyday, you, whoever is listening. Back then in ’98, I was playing compact discs, not streaming. There were no texts — the smartphone hadn't even been invented. If you wanted to contact the show, you actually had to call. A real phone. With a cord. Through the land. And yet — somehow — the connection between us was just as alive then as it is now. Because the real magic of radio has never been about the tech. It's about connection. It's about the quiet intimacy of someone letting you into their car, their kitchen, their morning routine — trusting you to be there while they wake up, get ready, face whatever the day brings. I've made more mistakes than I can count — dead ends, stumbles, mumbles, at times evolving as a human out loud, and next hour devolving as that same mess of a man. But I've learned that creativity at its heart is really just being unafraid to make mistakes. And then showing up again the next day. It reminds us that the childhood joy of play should still be with us. Everything’s real rigid and scary right now isn’t it? Here’s the joy of being a fool sometimes! Not knowing is my why. It's the reason I still love this — the mystery, the wonder of what might emerge next. The thrill of not knowing what story or laughter or authentic human moment will unfold. Radio is one of the few places and spaces we go to today for shared experience. And through it all — you've been there. Radio is described as being a companion. It’s a latin word meaning the one you share bread with. Isn’t that great? the one you share bread with And that's what we do, every morning — we share the bread of time, laughter, and life together in that moment. You've let me be part of your celebrations and your heartbreaks. Your mundane Tuesdays and your extraordinary moments. You've trusted me with your mornings, and I don't take that lightly.
