Honorable Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s maiden speech – My unbiased thoughts! The speech was delivered in a movie-climax-like, dramatized style. This is trivial to me because Vijay is a political novice and an actor known for his punchy dialogue delivery. Positives! • He spoke about unity and inclusiveness. In fact, he has walked the talk by giving seats to people from all walks of life. • He stressed that he would be the CM of even his opponents and enemies. • His touching promises on women’s safety and law and order were heartening. • His promise of transparency in governance was welcome. • What impressed me the most was his promise to remain the sole power centre and decision-maker (addressing fears such as mine that he might be exploited). This was not the case with the DMK, which had multiple power centres. • I also liked the professional pant-shirt look versus the white dhoti cliché. Negatives! • Criticizing the outgoing government for emptying the treasury and piling up debt. (TN’s debt-to-GDP ratio is actually quite healthy, and much of the spending was directed towards productive industrial development. Meanwhile, the freebies Vijay has promised could themselves increase debt.) • Promising that he would use his own funds and not people’s money for his schemes. This sounds silly, impractical, and unrealistic considering the scale of promises he has made. Conclusions! I didn’t vote for him, but I don’t feel as much fear and skepticism as I did even yesterday. His speech has indeed evoked that tiny bit of optimism that maybe he might do some good things. I’ll take that for now and keep the anxiety that he is a greenhorn at bay. He is a political novice, and I know his speech was full of promises that may or may not translate into action. Having said this, let’s give him six months and then evaluate his performance. It is critical to never take sides. Only then will there be clarity. Many congratulations once again, Sir! @actorvijay @TVKVijayHQ

Will DMK and ADMK join together to defeat Vijay? @arivalayam is a textbook political party that protests everything and will never let a government function. But when in power, DMK can be the most compliant political party, willing to make all kinds of adjustments and compromises with anyone and everyone. @AIADMKOfficial especially under EPS, is a spent force. It will cling onto anything to get to power because it can’t do it on its own anymore. EPS has lost 11 elections on the trot. Now, can they join together to defeat a political novice like @actorvijay ? I don’t know, and if they do, I feel Tamil Nadu will stand behind @TVKVijayHQ
