Kellogg is commonly cited because he was an early culprit, but the medical industry in the 20th century was full of people who believed the same as him. They also believed phimosis caused epilepsy.

@JillFilipovic Why do you feel it is an unusual choice for someone to repair the harm that was done to their body to the extent that is possible? People who have experienced genital mutilation deserve to have treatment options to reverse damage and heal just as any other assault victim should.

@JillFilipovic I try not to wade into this too much but it's not "just because." It was popularised during the World Wars as a public health initiative like fluoridation and vaccines. Authorities only started backtracking on that to appease activists. Just as they are with vaccines now.

Genital mutilation is not a gendered issue, it is the same regardless of whether the victim is male, female, or intersex.

My wife and I recently scheduled an appointment to get our 7 year old circumcised. We’ve waited 2 months, and now the day before the procedure he’s having second thoughts. Parents who have gone through this before: what’s your advice on how to proceed? Bribe with ice cream?

Still baffles me why circumcision is the norm in the US for non-Jewish men. There are literally no benefits to it, and downsides that extend to losing your entire penis if the surgery is botched. It happens.

@VeronikaSl18768 @men_are_human That’s terrible, but that doesn’t erase the experience of girls in communities like Malaysia and the Dawoodi Bohra community. The fact that more extreme forms of genital mutilation exists doesn’t make the harm to girls who experienced milder forms any less real.

@NationAfrica “Circumcision” (gen1tal mut1lation) doesn’t prevent HIV. In fact, it increases the risk of STIs, and it is a form of mutilation that psychologically and physically harms its victims. You should be funding programs to help circumcision survivors, not create more of them.
