In the Greek text of Matthew 16:18 (the language Matthew was written in), Jesus says: “You are Peter [Petros – a small stone] and on this rock [petra – a large bedrock] I will build my church.” The “rock” Jesus points to is Peter’s confession that He is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
We don’t have the original Aramaic conversation, so interpreters focus on the inspired Greek wording. Either way, other passages show the true foundation is Christ Himself: “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11), and the church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20).
