@shegone03 He’s not wrong, but I would propose that the broader question is why aspiring players with real shots at a career sign up with them. With kids, it’s the parents driving it — gurus are giving ‘em what they want and cashing the check. More advanced players should know better.

Every player I ever coached was asking me the same 3 questions. They never said them out loud. It didn't matter what the lineup looked like. It didn't matter what the scoreboard said. They just needed to know 3 things. And every leader, every coach, every parent is being asked the same ones. Here they are. Question #1: Can I trust you? Trust isn't given. It's earned. You earn it through transparency and honesty not when things are going well, but when things are hard. How I built it: • Do what you say you're going to do • Tell them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear • Show up the same way whether you're winning or losing You lose trust fast. You build it slow. Question #2: Can you make me better? This one is on you as a leader. They're not just asking about their swing or their stats. They're asking: do you see me clearly enough to help me grow? Question #3: Do you care about me? This is the most important one. And you can't fake it. You can't lead anybody if they don't believe you care about them beyond what they produce on the field. Three questions. No stat tracks them. But they determine everything.

Definitely the most important 10 days of his UK coaching career thus far. It could define it bc if he has a great NIL/portal haul (and gets Stokes too) it could set the stage for a resurgent KY Basketball program. If he whiffs, then it could be a repeat of last season, the end of his run as head coach at KY.

This portal/recruiting class may be the most important ten days of the Mark Pope era, starting with tonight and the Stokes visit But there isn’t any reason to panic or worry yet. Most of UK’s biggest targets are on the board and there is money for them Ask again in 2 weeks

I think that’s a very fair argument. I thought Travis Perry should have stayed last season bc of that same logic. I suppose it depends on how the next season(s) go. IF Noah stays, and I would almost bet Pope offers him the opportunity, and he helps KY get back on track to final 4’s, a Natty THEN he becomes a legend. In KY, there’s tremendous long term value in that for sure.

Stokes visiting this week, Zoom with Pope at Keeneland shows KY Basketball still has significant value to elite players and he’s a good recruiter, trying hard to build an elite roster. Those dudes don’t come (at all) unless they like Pope, see the potential at KY with that brand and their NIL capacity. I have been VERY critical of Pope this past season bc of the poor on court results, word salad answers, weird substitution patters etc. But, after watching the CBS documentary it made me understand his passion, commitment way more in the midst of very significant challenges with player injuries. He missed on a few players, too, overvalued them. It happens, it’s over, flush it, move on, focus on next season. I hope Pope lands a great portal class and gets Stokes. If he does that then we may see an entirely different product next season, one that BBN is truly proud of too🤷🏻‍♂️😊@AllUKBall_HPS
