I thoroughly enjoyed hosting former Governor and Congressman Mark Sanford in Dorchester County last night — his first public remarks since filing for his old SC-01 seat. Congressional districts like this one don’t open up often — typically once every 6–10 years. When they do, they usually attract a large field of candidates. In this race, we already have 11 Republicans running, and I’ve had the chance to meet 9 of them. I can honestly say I like something unique about each one. They bring a wide range of backgrounds, experience, and perspectives, and I’m grateful for the depth and diversity in this field. It’s truly one of the strongest candidate lineups I’ve seen in any South Carolina race in years. That’s why I’m especially excited about our upcoming joint candidate forum next week with the Dorchester and Berkeley GOP — it will be a great opportunity for voters to see just how deep this field really is. For those who missed last night’s event, I wanted to share a few thoughts on what Mark Sanford brings to the conversation. There will inevitably be the usual low-brow jokes about Argentina — and that’s understandable. But there’s a reason Sanford won three terms in Congress after the scandal: there’s real substance there if you’re willing to look past the headlines (and I get that some aren’t, which is fair). Lowcountry voters have long appreciated his strong commitment to fiscal responsibility — his focus on debt, deficits, and the dangers of endless money printing that devalues our currency and fuels inflation. Eight years after he left office, those warnings have proven prescient. For the past five years, inflation and affordability have topped the list of voter concerns in every election cycle. Last night, Sanford connected those dots clearly. He spoke about how inflation acts as a hidden tax, and referenced pre-WWII Germany, where currency devaluation made basic goods unaffordable almost overnight. He argued that our national debt is ultimately paid for through this quiet erosion of purchasing power. This emphasis on monetary policy and fiscal discipline won’t resonate with every voter, especially when culture-war issues dominate the headlines. But I believe it’s a vital addition to the conversation — particularly for my generation, which is watching quality of life decline and the American Dream slip further out of reach. So yes — make the jokes if you want. But don’t count out the candidate with near-universal name recognition and over a million dollars in his campaign account. Last night, Sanford connected with the room. He was sharp, personable, friendly, and credible — reaching Trump supporters, committed backers of other candidates, and everyone in between. This race just got a lot more interesting. Can’t wait to see how it all shakes out!
