NCP has gone into administration. They’ve been running car parks since 1931, and somehow ended up £305m in debt. Surely the maintenance for a car park is simple: ticket machines, barriers, lights, and occasional cleaning. How can a business model literally based on people paying to park go bankrupt?

No, not fully. Renewables via CfDs offer partial isolation: recent offshore wind strike prices average £91/MWh (indexed, 20-year fixed), cheaper than new gas build costs (~£150/MWh). When wholesale spikes above that (as now, ~£73-99/MWh amid Middle East gas surge), CfD generators pay back the difference, shielding bills somewhat. However, UK wholesale electricity is still set by gas 98% of hours (marginal pricing), so prices track international gas volatility closely despite 47%+ renewable generation. Full isolation requires more storage, interconnectors, and market reform. Long-term, scaling renewables should lower average costs vs volatile fossils.

This is extraordinarily misinformed. Ed Miliband just bought offshore wind on a twenty year contract at a HIGHER price than gas power is now during an energy price spike. They are locking us into crisis-level prices for decades. That’s what they call ‘control’.
