I have been using Claude Code daily and somehow missed that hooks exist. 10 minutes of setup and my entire workflow is now automatic.
Hooks are shell commands that fire at specific points in Claude Code's lifecycle. They are deterministic so they run every single time instead of hoping the LLM remembers your instruction.
→ Auto-format every file the moment Claude edits it
→ Block edits to protected files before they happen
→ Desktop notifications when Claude finishes or needs input instead of constantly checking back
→ Re-inject project context after compaction so Claude never loses track of what you were building
→ Auto-approve specific permission prompts so you stop clicking yes on the same dialog 50 times a day
The real unlock is that hooks communicate back to Claude through exit codes.
Exit 0 means proceed, exit 2 means block the action and Claude receives feedback on why.
So your hooks are not just running scripts, they are actively steering how Claude works.

after the, er, recent drama, I went into a rabbit hole exploring the space, and it's like my brain's been reprogrammed
lemme put it this way: there's nothing _fundamental_ about filesystems. or terminal commands. or _even your favourite programming language_. but there _is_ something fundamental about storage. or lambda calculus. the future of computing looks more like math+symbolic execution than unix+whatever's in the training set
(and it would be very bad for humanity if this wasn't true!)
