We had the chance to meet with Timberwolves CEO Matthew Caldwell and a few executives from DAZN this morning about DAZN becoming the new home for watching Timberwolves games. A few notes from that meeting… - A lot is still to be determined in all of this, notably price point for a Wolves game-specific subscription and who will be on the broadcast team. - I asked if it’s fair to say the price point will be similar to the previous $20 a month subscription for the FanDuel Sports app, and they said they did not know yet but that it’s fair to say that it could be similar. They did say the Wolves-specific price point would be lower than the general subscription price for DAZN. - For the broadcast team, not only on air but behind the scenes, they are considering the incumbent options while also looking at outside options. - 15 games will be free to consume via DAZN without a paid subscription for DAZN. Significantly more free to consume games than previous season (i.e. KARE 11 last season). - Up to a maximum of 34 games will be nationally televised, we were told. And the popularity of the Wolves, specifically Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball, makes it likely that they will be close to that maximum. Up to a maximum of 15 games will be national TV exclusives, meaning those would not be on the DAZN. Games that are on national TV but not exclusives will be broadcast by both the national TV outlet and DAZN. - DAZN feels very confident the quality of their tech behind distribution will be significantly better than previous partners. Previous streaming partners for the Wolves consistently had issues with their tech and quality of their apps for distribution. DAZN has a much better reputation and history in the sports streaming space than the Wolves' previous partners. - DAZN is excited about Wolves-specific content and social interaction within the DAZN app. There will be options that did not exist with previous broadcast partners. - The Timberwolves signed a 5-year deal with DAZN, with a mutual opt-out option after one year. But DAZN hopes to become an aggregate hub for the Wolves and many other NBA teams in the years to come. This opportunity with the Wolves and a few other teams is DAZN's foot in the NBA door to potentially become the NBA's primary home for regional sports in the future.
