This Memorial Day, I want to tell you about a Japanese general most Americans have never heard of.
His name was Tadamichi Kuribayashi.
In 1927, he lived in America. He studied at Harvard. He drove across your country and wrote letters home about how kind Americans were.
Eighteen years later, he commanded the Japanese forces at Iwo Jima.
He knew he would lose. He knew he would die. He fought anyway, to buy his homeland time.
For 36 days, 6,800 of your Marines died on that black sand. So did 21,000 of his men. Including him.
He never saw his three children again.
Today, American and Japanese veterans return to that same island together. They lay wreaths side by side. The fallen of both nations rest in one place now.
On the memorial stone there, his widow's words are carved in stone:
Once enemies. Now friends. Never again.

The Haitian rebels ended slavery...in Haiti.
SLAVES have always opposed slavery - slave warriors have occasionally and at least temporarily ended it (Spartacus, etc.). What distinguishes the West is that free men fought for the slaves.

Ronald Reagan weathered media criticism with a smile and a sense of humor so disarming that, despite it being just as bad and sometimes worse than what Trump receives (seriously, look it up), he was re-elected in 1984 with the support of 49 states.
That's why history will remember him as a far stronger and more beloved President than Donald Trump, and it's not even close.

All fake. He gave the Iranian regime billions for terror abroad, missiles later fired at civilians, and genocide in Syria. He allowed the regime to preserve its enrichment capacity for later. He turned his back on pro-democracy protesters. Obama is the reason we had to go to war.

The fact is that Iraq is a democracy. It's not perfect, but it's always important when we mention democracies in the region; Iraq is a democracy and it deserves credit for its democratic institutions. It's a complicated country, to be sure. It has all sorts of problems and challenges, some of its own making but also some of the making of others.
However, I think it's unfair when people speak about the whole region as one of just regimes; the fact is that there are a diversity of institutions in the region, there are states that are more authoritarian, and less; monarchies and democracies; etc. We should see the region as a spectrum and one that is very diverse than some of the monolithic and prejudiced talking points that falsely see the Middle East in a negative.
The region has changed a lot. The era of extremism and groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS, has changed. Will it remain changed, and the extremists removed or weakened? I hope so. But this is a fact, the extremism of a decade ago is different today. Extremist groups that eat up countries have moved their center of gravity to the Sahel; Iranian-backed militias are slightly weakened in the region (not enough); and "jihadists," in my view, are very much sidelined. Some will disagree, but the facts should speak for themselves. It's a very different region from ten years ago or 20 years ago, etc.

I will never get over the fact that Disney chose to name the heroes of the Star Wars sequels "the Resistance", despite the fact that the Rebel Alliance overthrew the Empire decades earlier and re-established the Galactic Republic. There's a broader lesson in there about how modern writers and artists think about everything. They ALWAYS have to be the brave revolutionaries and are never willing to accept that a day could come when they themselves become the ruling order.
