Good news: BJP govt in Bengal to hand over around 120 acres in the strategic Siliguri “Chicken Neck” Corridor to the Centre. Why is this important? The Siliguri Corridor is India’s only narrow land link connecting the Northeast to the mainland. For decades, it has been considered one of India’s most sensitive strategic zones because of its proximity to China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. It was also on target of extremist & jihadi elements like Sharjeel Imam in the past who threaten to cut Northeast from rest of India but blocking the Chicken Neck. With greater central control, India can now safeguard Northeast, accelerate Defence infrastructure & surveillance, Highways, railways & logistics hubs, Border security projects, Trade and Act East connectivity North East will hugely benefit from this step of West Bengal. But why wasn’t this done earlier? Political friction between the Centre and previous state governments, especially during Left Front and TMC rule, often slowed strategic projects in the region. Mamta’s vote-bank politics & her ago also prevented this stronger central intervention in this highly sensitive corridor.
