27 Lakh Voters were deleted in West Bengal. These were not 'dead people' or 'bangladeshis'. These were real people who had already appealed to get their votes restored. The Supreme court could’ve delayed the West Bengal elections until the tribunals finished hearing the appeals of these voters. But they didn’t. Only around 1607 voters were restored in time by phase 2 of these elections. Almost every appeal that was heard turned out to be a wrongful deletion. In any functional democracy, this would not count as a free and fair election where a large section of voters have lost their voting rights. I'm not saying that TMC would've won for sure if they were added back, maybe BJP would still win, but the question is about the fairness of these elections. Free and fair elections are a spectrum. Ever since Delhi-Maharashtra-Bihar-Bengal, this needle has moved more and more towards being unfair. Each time somehow the opposition parties participate as usual in the electoral process thinking that they can still pull of a win despite the compromised EC, ED, CBI etc. and each time they have been proven wrong after 2024 Lok Sabha. The question is, at what point will they feel that the level of unfairness is so unfair that elections should be boycotted? I personally feel TMC should have refused to participate in these elections until all those 27 lakh appeals were finished being heard.

Reminder that Election Commissioner was appointed by Modi and Shah in violation of spirit of Supreme Court judgment. And Supreme Court has kept challenge to appointment in cold storage since. These elections have no moral or democratic legitimacy. Democracy is plaything for BJP

@virsanghvi Great decision by chief election commissioner and his team to do counting of votes after 4 days of West Bengal election as violence is prevalent in elections there so if they need to do repolls so it can be done before counting of votes.

Frankly it’s crazy to count votes several weeks after they have been cast in several states. The EC says that it is impossible to do it any quicker Even if this is true (which I doubt) then how can anyone support simultaneous elections for centre & all states as the BJP wants?

Under his watch, Bihar’s SIR deleted 65 lakh voters from draft rolls; Muslims formed 24.7% of exclusions despite being only 16.9% of Bihar’s population. In Seemanchal, a Muslim voter had a 52% higher chance of deletion than a non-Muslim voter. BJP literally wrote a letter on party letterhead to the Bihar CEO demanding deletion of 78,384 Muslim voters. Seven opposition parties filed formal removal notices in both Houses of Parliament, charges: voter disenfranchisement, obstruction of electoral fraud probes, zero transparency in data sharing, functioning under the thumb of the executive. And Bengal’s “bloodless polls”? Post-poll violence broke out in South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Malda, North 24 Parganas within 24 hours. 80,000 central forces still couldn’t stop it. Seshan was hailed because he was actually independent; no PM selected him to protect the PM. Gyanesh Kumar was chosen by Modi + Amit Shah + Modi’s nominee = 2 vs 1. That’s not independence. Sunday musing: A friend raises a good point: why do we need 4 days @ECISVEEP after final voting for counting to begin? Think about Kerala and Assam: EVMs have been kept in strong rooms for almost 4 weeks. Doesn’t happen in any other part of the world.

To my mind, this Bengal election is a litmus test of whether we have fallen below the minimum threshold of electoral integrity, whether electoral democracy has any future at all. I cannot get into numbers, but all the credible information that I have been able to gather so far points to a comfortable lead for the TMC, more than enough to make up for the SIR damage. If despite this the ECI manages to conjure a victory for BJP, this has to be the result of an electoral fraud. Such an (unlikely, despite what exit polls say) event must get the entire opposition to come together and ask if there is any point of contesting any more elections under these circumstances. — Yogendra Yadav
