Most people remember him as Saruman, Count Dooku, or Dracula. But those iconic roles were merely shadows of the man behind them. Christopher Lee didn't live one life. He lived several—each more extraordinary than most people's entire existence. Born in London in 1922, Lee grew up in a family of old European distinction. His step-cousin was Ian Fleming, who would go on to create James Bond—a character whose elegance and danger some say carried echoes of Lee himself. Then the world erupted into war. Lee volunteered immediately. Poor eyesight kept him from flying, so he joined RAF Intelligence instead, eventually moving into special operations—the kind of work that remains partially classified even today. He worked behind enemy lines in the final stages of the war and beyond, doing things he would almost never discuss. Years later, on the set of The Lord of the Rings, that silence broke for just a moment. Peter Jackson was directing a scene where Saruman gets stabbed from behind. He suggested Lee let out a dramatic scream. Lee calmly interrupted: "Have you any idea what kind of noise a man makes when he's stabbed in the back? Because I do." The set fell silent. Jackson quietly adjusted the scene. After the war, Lee turned to acting—not chasing stardom, but simply working. And he worked relentlessly. Over 280 films across seven decades, in multiple languages. He spoke fluent English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, with working knowledge of Swedish, Russian, and Greek. Long before Hollywood embraced international stars, Lee was one—performing across Europe with the same commanding presence he brought to British cinema. He became the face of Dracula for a generation. He brought menace and sophistication to villains that could have been cartoonish. He made every role—great or forgettable—watchable simply by being in it. Then, at age 88, he did something nobody expected. Christopher Lee released a heavy metal album. Not as a novelty. Not as a joke. A serious, symphonic metal concept album about Charlemagne—sung in multiple languages, backed by actual metal musicians who respected his vision. Critics were stunned. It was genuinely good. He released another album at 91. Another at 92. His final recording was a thunderous metal cover of "My Way"—less Frank Sinatra's croon, more Viking battle cry. A man born before television existed was recording metal music in the streaming era. But perhaps his most profound connection was literary. In the late 1950s, long before The Lord of the Rings became a global phenomenon, Christopher Lee met J.R.R. Tolkien briefly at a pub in Oxford. Lee was already a devoted fan who read the trilogy every single year. Decades later, when Peter Jackson assembled his cast, Christopher Lee was the only actor who had actually met the author himself. He desperately wanted to play Gandalf. He was cast as Saruman instead. And he gave that role a gravity no one else could have—because he wasn't just performing Tolkien's words. He had heard Tolkien speak. He understood the weight of that world from the source. Lee never retired. His final film roles came in 2015—the year he died—at 93 years old. He worked until the very end, not from necessity, but because creation was simply how he lived. Think about the span of that existence: Born in 1922. Fought in WWII. Worked in intelligence operations that remain classified. Witnessed the birth of cinema, television, and the internet. Moved from silent films to CGI blockbusters. Played Dracula, wizards, Sith Lords, and sang heavy metal in his nineties. Legends grew around him—some exaggerated, some untrue. But the truth never needed embellishment. Christopher Lee was a war veteran, a polyglot, a cinematic titan, a metal musician, and the last living bridge between Tolkien's world and its retelling on screen. He once said: "Every actor has to make terrible films from time to time. The trick is never to be terrible in them." #archaeohistories

A small town in Brazil has gone viral for its wax museum featuring famous figures. Brazilian sculptor Arlindo Armacollo became locally famous for creating wax figures of well-known figures such as Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Albert Einstein, and Pope John Paul II. First displayed in the town of Rolândia, the collection later went viral online, drawing attention and debate over the statues’ unusual realism. One visiting reporter remarked, “It might look simple, but achieving this level of detail took real work,” adding that Armacollo aimed “to capture not only the appearance, but also the soul of each person.” Armacollo largely brushed aside the criticism, saying, “I couldn’t care less about it,” while explaining, “I make these works because I enjoy doing them… If people like them, they can visit. If they don’t, they don’t have to. Why worry?” His figures, crafted with wax and imported glass eyes, are now exhibited in a museum named after his father, alongside newer additions including Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II.

Unlike many billionaires who acquire land for private estates or commercial development, Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma, co-founder of Alibaba, chose a different path with his purchase in upstate New York. In 2015, Ma spent approximately $23 million to acquire 28,000 acres of pristine wilderness featuring dense forests, rivers, and mountains. Rather than developing the property, he dedicated it to conservation, transforming the land into a protected wildlife sanctuary. The vast area now serves as a safe haven for black bears, white-tailed deer, migratory birds, and numerous other species. It has also become a valuable site for ecological research, enabling scientists to study biodiversity in an undisturbed natural environment. Ma’s commitment reflects his broader dedication to global conservation. He has supported multiple environmental initiatives worldwide and believes that significant wealth should be used to preserve irreplaceable natural landscapes for future generations. This project stands out as a notable example of using private resources for large-scale environmental protection in the United States.

Less than 25 years after the fall of Acre in May 1291 – the last, decisive defeat for the Crusader states – the Knights Templar fell too... Founded around 1119, they began modestly as military escorts for the Christian pilgrims flocking to the newly conquered Holy Lands. It was commonly said that the order had only nine knights for its first nine years – a figurative truth that also nods to the way in which the order always seems to have had a mystical identity alongside its material one. Myths and fantasies accreted to it; arguably, they were its downfall. The great Cistercian scholar Bernard of Clairvaux, an early supporter, acclaimed them as ‘a new sort of knighthood’, but they were a new sort of monasticism too, one which – counterintuitively – privileged violence over contemplation. ‘Whether one dies in bed or in war, the death of his saints will doubtlessly be precious in the sight of the Lord’, Bernard wrote. ‘However, the more precious is death in war.’ The Templars were also a new financial system. At their peak they had a network of some 870 houses and castles, and their vast reach made them the preferred choice for transferring large sums internationally. Henry III used the Crown Jewels as security for a loan. Baldwin II of Constantinople had something better: a relic of the True Cross. In the end, it was all about money. The Templars were rich; Philip IV of France was in need. In the autumn of 1307 he pounced. The Templars were arrested and charged with blasphemy, idolatry and institutionalised sodomy. Was it true you were required to deny Christ three times and to spit on a crucifix, they were asked. Were you told, ‘If any brother of the Order wishes to lie with [you] carnally, [you] shall accept this because it is a duty’? In 1307, Philip IV of France was feeling uneasy over the Templars’ immense power. At their peak the Templars had a network of some 870 houses and castles. It was all about money. The Templars were rich, very rich indeed - and Philip IV of France was in need. In the autumn of 1307 he pounced.... Philip IV had every Templar in France arrested. Philip handed them over to the Inquisition for interrogation, and confiscated all the Order’s property. Many outlandish accusations were made against the Templars. This included worshipping the Devil, denying God, Christ and the Virgin Mary, spitting or urinating on the cross, and engaging in ritualistic homosexuality. Those Templars that were arrested, were brutally tortured. They were tortured to the point where they were forced to confess to the abominations they were accused of. Many of the knights recanted their confessions afterwards, saying how they were forced into making them. On 11th May 1310, 54 Templars were burned at the stake in a field outside Paris. After this mass burning, many of those still alive in prison feared for their lives. They hastily announced that their confessions had been true after all, in the hope of escaping a fiery death... Philip eventually pressured the French pope, Clement V, into closing the Order down in 1312. Two years later the Grand Master himself, Jacques de Molay, was burned alive in Paris. The accusations and confessions have surrounded the Templars with an aura of mystery, that has lasted ever since. There were tales of them worshipping a curious head, carved of wood, bearded, covered with silver or gold leaf, or with four legs - this was thought to be the embalmed head of Christ. Another theory is that the Templars were the custodians of the Holy Grail, which came to them by way of Mary Magdalene. This was reportedly hid away in Scotland. Many also think the many treasures of the Knights Templar, was then transferred to Nova Scotia - namely Oak Island. #archaeohistories

@archeohistories fun fact the knights templar often touted as heroes used the name of God to rape and murder innocent women and children. Gee that was done an awful lot. Look at the entire history of the Christian religion. Or rather the history any and every religion for that matter.

An iconic 1945 photo shows American soldier Ivan Babcock jokingly wearing the Crown of the Holy Roman Empire... Private First Class Ivan Babcock (29 at the time), a member of the Army's 165th Signal Photo Company. The photo was taken inside a mine in Siegen, Germany, which the Nazis had used as a secret storage facility to protect precious works of art from bombing. April 1945, near the end of WWII. Babcock wrote in his diaries that he wore the crown as a joke, despite sensing the object's incredible historical significance. The original image is in black and white and was digitally colored by Julius Jääskeläinen. The Crown of the Holy Roman Empire. The relic, also known as the Reichskrone, is one of the most important jewels in European history. It was probably made in 10th Century (962 AD) for the coronation of Otto I. It has a unique octagonal structure, is made of gold and decorated with 144 precious stones (including sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts) and pearls. It was the official crown used for the coronations of the Holy Roman Emperors until 1792. Today, it is kept in the Imperial Treasury at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. © Colorized History #archaeohistories

@VisualCap I assure you the number is much higher in CA. Just the mortgage payments, taxes and insurance on an upper middle class house in a decent area is going to be over $100k/yr. Unless home ownership is no longer a marker of “middle class”

In total, the nation’s top 25 philanthropists have donated $275 billion so far in their lifetimes, an uptick of $34 billion over last year. That’s a huge sum but represents just 14% of their combined fortunes, the smallest percentage since 2021. Not generous enough to make the top 25 cut: Elon Musk and Larry Page, the world’s two richest people, who together are worth more than $1 trillion. In the grim streets of Victorian London, a homeless girl, like many others, was left to face the harsh realities of survival alone. The industrial revolution had brought immense growth to the city, but it also led to overcrowding, poverty, and a lack of adequate housing, especially for the most vulnerable. By the mid-19th century, it was estimated that there were up to 30,000 homeless children roaming the streets of London. These children, often orphans or abandoned, had little to no chance of a stable life, as they were forced to fend for themselves in a city that was indifferent to their plight. The homeless children of London, many of them girls like the one in question, had to navigate the dangers of the streets, including the risk of exploitation, disease, and crime. They scavenged for food, sought shelter in alleyways, or hid in abandoned buildings. With no education or prospects for a better life, they were often left to fall into cycles of poverty or criminality. The harsh conditions meant that they lived in constant fear of hunger, illness, and the brutal reality of being forgotten by society. Many were subjected to the whims of unscrupulous adults, who took advantage of their vulnerability. The plight of these homeless children eventually sparked public outcry, leading to efforts to address their suffering. Social reformers, philanthropists, and organizations such as the London Poor Law Guardians sought to provide some measure of aid. However, the long-lasting impact of the Victorian era’s poverty-stricken streets left a legacy of hardship for many. Despite the work of charities and reformers, countless children continued to endure unimaginable challenges, serving as a stark reminder of the deep divides between the rich and the poor in Victorian society. © Colorized History #archaeohistories
