@NotAvgLiberal I did 13 years in Germany in my B Army years and the were several times the troops did not dare go out in the economy. There were many times the younger Germans didn’t want thee military there, we would get rocks tossed at us spit on if by yourself you would get beat up.

The reason why is physically structural. A lot of Europe’s road network predates cars, let alone modern freight. Medieval city layouts, tight turns, narrow village streets, older bridges. Even highways (Autobahn, etc.) are more constrained in geometry than US interstates.
