Given the way the rules are written, the ref had no real choice but to call a penalty. But this is a perfect example of how the cost of a penalty to the defending team is often vastly disproportionate to the benefit that team got by committing the penalty. Yamal doesn't play this ball - he lets it deflect off his arm. And he has no real possibility of turning into a good scoring chance from where he was. So Diane's interference cost Spain maybe 0.2 expected goals (if that). But the benefit to Spain of the penalty was 0.8 expected goals, That's an outsized benefit - which is why players look for penalties.

Spain picking apart France. France’s attack against good teams is completely unremarkable. Really Mbappe is their main threat. Also they have no creative threat. Just pace. Olise can’t play that far back defensible, play as a wandering winger and be the only creative player. Spain is too complete of a team. Edit: finally they bring on Cherki. A creative player. Exactly what I said they’re missing. It’s their only hope right now. Just spamming pace doesn’t work against top teams.

France looks so normal when they aren't playing Norways B team, Sweden who didn't win a single game in WC qualifying, scraping by on a pk with parguay, and playing a young and injured Morocco in 98 degree weather. One of the easiest routes the semi-finals I've ever seen lol. They always have the attacking threat, but their midfield will be dominated by Spain's. They don't know how to deal with that and they look disconnected. Their one weakness is their defense since they bank on their attack threatening to prevent teams stay too high. Getting exposed hard. Spain is the best team in the tournament. Seems obvious now. Individual talent vs. complete team. Although Spain's attack always has the issue of the inability to finish which will be what keeps France in the game.
