Victoria Crosses of Rifles Heritage: Private Adam Wakenshaw, Durham Light Infantry (an antecedent of The Rifles) was awarded a VC for his actions at Mersa Matruh (27/06/1942). Despite having an arm blown off, he continued to fire his anti-tank gun until he was finally killed.

Today is the 81st anniversary of the start of the Siege of Malta during World War 2 (11th June 1940). Three antecedent regiments of The Rifles took part in the defence. 2/DEVONS and 1/ DORSETS saw action throughout the siege, while 1/DLI served on Malta for 6-months in 1942.
