@Dunkirk_1940 @WW2Talk @BritishArmy I was fortunate to get to know Dickie and Shirley well , he was a humble ,courteous unassuming man , a real Gentleman with the heart of a Lion. Famous for his extreme valour in May 1940 but also for his work post war in establishing Finchale Training College in Durham ,Faithful

🌺 A new memorial garden and plaque in Leeds is helping ensure the contribution of Caribbean World War Two veterans is recognised, remembered and shared with future generations. The tribute honours 49 RAF veterans who settled in the city after the war, many of whom went on to help build communities and shape life in modern Britain. Alongside their service during wartime, the memorial also recognises the experiences many faced during the Windrush generation and beyond. Projects like this matter because remembrance is about more than history — it is about preserving personal stories, recognising contribution and making sure every part of the Armed Forces community is seen and valued. Our thanks to everyone involved in creating this lasting tribute. 🌺 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

22 years ago today The Battle of Danny Boy. What began as an ambush in Iraq became over 3 hours of brutal fighting ending in hand-to-hand combat. To the men beside me that day — your courage and determination will stay with me forever. Hermer & Shiner couldn’t lace are boots!

During the closing days of 1944, editors at the London edition of Stars and Stripes decided to select a frontline GI as "Our Man of the Year." This was American tanker Sgt. John Parks, 4th Armored Division, whose face show no glorious propaganda smile, but the reality of war. Parks was killed in December 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. He was shot from his hatch, fell into his tank which went up in flames from enemy fire. Nothing left but ashes.

UK Armed Forces Personnel have conducted a Parachute Operation to deliver critical medical support to Tristan da Cunha - Britains most remote inhabited island overseas territory. Paratroopers and military clinicians from @16AirAssltBCT, jumped from an A400 aircraft during the Op.

8th May 1945. After nearly six years of loss, Victory in Europe Day was declared. Streets filled, bonfires lit and Churchill spoke as Britain marked the end of war in Europe – while remembering the cost, and those still fighting in the Pacific. ow.ly/RKPu50YRBVX

@Errass40 Not much to see of C16 from outside I'm afraid. This is what appears to be the main gateway to the camp, which you can see as the lowest of 3 tracks (1 dark, 2 light) coming off the road. A little bit south on the west side of the road is the giveaway light mark of a D-Day layby.

Went out to enjoy the weather on my new gravel bike today and stopped by here. The trees mark the southern end of marshalling camp C15, which housed some 1200 men before D-Day, I think mainly the Durham Light Infantry.

My uncle, Captain Wylder Modine, was a real B-17 "Flying Fortress" pilot during WWII. After returning from a bombing mission, he got hit by anti-aircraft fire and almost had his right arm taken off. He had his crew bail, but his co-pilot was shot up really bad and couldn’t parachute, so my uncle, with one arm, landed the heavily damaged B-17 in a field behind enemy lines. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart. I talked with him before making MEMPHIS BELLE in 1989. He gave me his dress uniform to wear in the film and said, “when you put that on, don't disrespect it.”

Just heading off to visit Oradour-sur-Glane for the first time, a location I have wanted to visit for a long time. ‘Down this road on a summer day in 1944, the soldiers came. Nobody lives here now. They stayed only a few hours. When they had gone, the community, which had lived for a thousand years, was dead. This is Oradour-sur-Glane, in France.’

ATTACKED A FEMALE POLICE OFFICER, WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER WHILE SHE WAS ON THE GROUND. His grandfather provided a character reference and said he was a good boy. No: He is not.

Today, on the 44th anniversary of the Sheffield being hit by an Exocet I pay my respects to our Shipmate, Bob. A Sheffield survivor who carried the weight of that day until he crossed the bar in 2023 and found his peace. To Bob and the 20 men killed that day RIP, GBNF

I’ve done the same training as they have and the only excuse for this is blind panic. When this happens you make sure you’re not sharing their shift pattern because they’ll land you in the sh1t one day.
