@ElJackoSupreme @CombatASemitism The Supreme Court upheld hate speech laws in the 1950s, actually. The courts in the 1960s ruled against them, but it isn't an immutably guaranteed First Amendment right to dress up as Hitler and stomp on the flag of the Jewish State.

@BriannaWu The challenge is penetration. Changing the terms of the debate. Not discussing each and every social media post people receive, but bringing people back to reality.

@BruceUnfiltered Social media should be treated like crack cocaine. It's a new kind of intoxicant that hooks people on hate and outrage and should be legislated out of existence.

Keir Starmer has said the UK should go further on addictive social media features after a major US jury ruling involving Google, YouTube and Meta. The debate now includes possible social media bans for under-16s, child safety regulation, platform design and online enforcement.

In fairness, Israel isn't a fan of Noah Smith either, but broadly speaking, if pressed, would probably say that anyone who obsessively hounds him and seeks his destruction is an absolute ghoul and probably also a fan of genocide and totalitarianism. So it's more or less mutual.
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

I'm not a fan of Israel, and I think America should significantly dial back our alliance with them if not end it entirely, and yet I think most of the Westerners who spend all day hating on Israel are absolute ghouls and fans of genocide and totalitarianism.

Palestinian leadership can't articulate a political endgame that is neither ethnic cleansing nor perpetual statelessness. It's naive to believe that if Israel articulates some new one—just as it has many times before—that it would meaningfully change how it’s perceived by Islamic countries or by Western leftists who have subordinated their politics to the interests of anti-Western Islamists because of some weird romanticization of Third World "anti-colonialism." Also, this is evading the question @MaxNordau asked. The answer is: tell the truth. That's what Yglesias would say a Republican should do with voters who believe Dominion voting machines rigged the 2020 election. Why should Democratic politicians not be similarly expected to tell the truth about Israel—that the notion the Jewish state carried out a "genocide" in Gaza is simply false?

@mattyglesias @bubbaraskin @MaxNordau If someone wants to fight you, the only thing you can do is defend yourself. Israel can't resolve the deep dysfunctions within the Palestinian and Middle Eastern Muslim world.

The mainstream success of figures like Hasan Piker is a sign of cultural decadence in the West. He presents himself as a socialist, yet his entire persona is rooted in consumer culture, brand obsession, and monetizing attention through streaming. He doesn’t just benefit from the system, he embodies its most superficial and excessive traits, a socialist classic. He has also expressed support for failed socialist regimes such as those in Venezuela and Cuba, downplaying the real-world consequences of those systems. At the same time, his open support for Hamas, an organization whose stated goal is literally the annihilation of all Jews, raises serious moral concerns, but I guess everything passes today at the Democratic party. This is what decadence looks like: a culture that elevates figures who combine performative ideology with hyper-consumerism, while normalizing extreme and illiberal positions. This is a major danger for free, open societies.

@adam_louis52328 I agree. People need to stop pointing fingers at the other side and realize we have a growing problem brought on by social media across the West. Majoritarian supremacy is spreading on both the right and left.

My goal, as a writer and thinker, is to give language to the lived experience of Jews since October 7th. The academy has been captured and overrun by a racist, majoritarian ideology that explicitly set out to degrade, dehumanize, and dismantle the very legitimacy of Jewish experience, Jewish speech, and Jewish belonging. To take back the language of the academy—its critical tools, its conceptual frameworks, its methods of interpretation—is therefore an act of re-appropriation, of justice, of equality, and of dignity. It is not a retreat into particularism but a fight against structural racism itself. And it is every bit a part of promoting Jewish and universal values, of repairing what has been broken, and of healing this world.

This is the same Hasan Piker who incited violence against me & is now campaigning along several Democratic candidates for political office. The Democratic party is finished if it allows for pro-Jihadi, pro-terror, pro-Hamas, champaign communists to be part of its senior ranks! 🤦‍♂️

@adam_louis52328 We have gotten to a point where people are justifying that their political opinions on a foreign war give them the right to target an ethnic minority with harassment and violence. This represents an assault on democratic principles.

Antizionist hate, racism, and abuse depends on Jewish participation. It depends on the notion that no clear boundary exists—that anything can be said about Israel, that one is “allowed to criticize Israel.” As soon as one instead sets a boundary, and states that antizionism is a clearly definable, objective phenomenon that is unacceptable, the machine sputters, starts, and rolls to a deafening halt. No, an antizionist, who is a bigoted, prejudiced racist against Israelis, is not allowed to “critique” Israel, no more than a KKK member is allowed to say what they want about Black people. There is a line. It exists. It exists because antizionism exists—and because antizionism is morally wrong and unacceptable.

Far-left radical ideas have infiltrated liberal spaces using the language of compassion to spread hate, replacing critical thinking with ideological submission. When truth is relative, the only tool for sorting out differences is power.
