Agreed, I could see a middle of the road option similar to what Pitt did the past two years. Accumulate picks and young players, but try to stay as competitive as possible to avoid giving the Bruins/Flyers a top 3 pick or whatever. A full rebuild does feel inevitable unless Matthews commits long-term and management pulls a rabbit out of the hat for the blueline

@Dynastija I’m Team Rebuild. Pelley is asking Chayka to perform a miracle, bc that’s what it will take to get this team back into the cup contention convo next ssn. It will likely take 34 requesting a trade for ownership to commit to a rebuild. I fear we’re just prolonging the inevitable.

TOR has a few solid pieces, but a big chunk of the roster is a mess/question mark. The Leafs don’t have an identity. It’s a collection of puzzle pieces that don’t fit together. Figure out what you want the team to be, and then get to work on building it. First step: Fire Berube.

By far my biggest concern too. Pelley shouldn't be involved in hockey decisions, and I'm not a fan of Rogers as a whole as owners. TFC/Raptors/Leafs have all made cost saving moves in recent years. If they aren't willing to pay Berube his severance package, next season is a write off.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The fact that Sundin isn't POHO and is getting eased into it as "Senior Advisor" is good. The fact that they want to keep Brandon Pridham who is good at his job is good. Chayka doesn't inspire me but he has remarkably small shoes to fill, Treliving was a disaster. Firing or keeping Berube will ultimately decide if I am excited for next season or not.

As for Chayka, I'm willing to give anybody a chance, I gave Treliving a chance when I wasn't a fan of his work in Calgary. I'm not going to dislike a person or panic unless they give me a reason to. I also can't buy that he's a snake oil salesman that tricked Leafs ownership. The amount of ties to Arizona and/or Chayka himself within the Leafs. Sullivan/Domi x 2/Sundin/Doan/Matthews/Knies. Seems like it would be bizarre for the Leafs to not have a great read on him.

I’ve seen a lot of: “with Chayka hired I’m handing my fan card in.” I don’t love the choice, but I’m def not there. I’ll give the guy a chance - maybe he has learned & changed. I’d be in that spot if Berube stays on as coach though. I can’t watch another game of his “hockey.”

Not mentioned enough: Leafs assistant coach Steve Sullivan was in AZ before John Chayka. He became Chayka's AGM in 2017 and interim GM when Chayka left. There's not a chance the Leafs didn't speak with him throughout this process. He'd know firsthand what happened.

Hilarious that people are painting it like the Leafs gave up on Mitch Marner. He refused to negotiate a renewal because he had a handshake deal in place with Vegas a year out from UFA. When the Leafs read the writing on the wall they tried to move him at the deadline and he refused to waive his no-move. He's now done more in one playoff series for Vegas than he did in 10 years of playoff series with the Leafs. He should be the most hated Leaf of all-time, and for me he certainly is.

There's been a lot of speculation that the Leafs could use their cap space to acquire a good player/bounce back candidate with a bad contract like Hamilton/Meier from NJ. Dallas can be added to that list, a lot of their fan base seem to want to move Harley or Hintz. I wonder if the team feels the same
