On #MemorialDay we honour all the fallen and those who gave everything in the defence of liberty.  The people of Europe will never forget the sacrifice of so many young soldiers who fought and died in far away lands and whose bravery allowed subsequent generations to live free.  Places in Europe still organise a system, first started in 1945, whereby Allied servicemen graves are adopted, cared for, visited and taken care of by descendants of people they liberated in the Second World War.  Perhaps the best example is the Dutch town of Margraten, where some 8,000 US soldiers rest. Here, this tradition helps keep the memory of the fallen alive, and remains rooted in the town's culture and profoundly ingrained in the people who live there. We remember. We honour them today and every day.

Today, the United States marks Memorial Day, honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service. We especially think of the Americans who fought in Europe during WWI and WWII, helped secure peace after the war, and continue to contribute to our shared security today.

Russia's latest indiscriminate attacks on Kyiv and Ukrainian cities have killed and injured yet more innocent people. We will not be silent. These acts of brutality do not serve to strengthen Russia's hand. It weakens it. The brave people of Ukraine remain resilient and Europe will keep standing with them.
