Firefighters contained an early morning fire in an elevator shaft before it could spread throughout a downtown high-rise building.   At approx. 08:11 this morning, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call reporting black smoke coming from the roof of a commercial high-rise in the 100 block of O'Connor St. Upon arrival, Firefighters were met with construction workers who reported a fire in the elevator shaft inside. The high-rise is currently vacant with only a construction crew working on site. Firefighter made entry to the elevator shaft through the underground parking. Two hose lines were advanced inside to attack the flames from above and below. The fire was extinguished and declared under control at 09:00 and contained to the area of origin before it could spread throughout the structure. Extensive ventilation operations were conducted to remove all the residual smoke that made its way throughout the high-rise building. CDC confirms first severe case of H5N1 Bird Flu in the U.S. While an investigation into the source of the infection is ongoing, it has been determined that the patient had exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks. No person-to-person spread of H5 bird flu has been detected. This case does not change CDC’s overall assessment of the immediate risk to the public’s health from H5N1 bird flu, which remains low.
