In 1960, John F. Kennedy wrote a letter called The Soft American, which called for creating new physical standards and expectations for our children to develop healthy bodies. It is time to issue a new standard for our children.

“There’s evidence that physical activity benefits structural brain changes, particularly in the hippocampus, which is involved in learning,” Hillman says. A research study led by Hillman & published in Neuroscience found that a 20-min walk boosts attention in children 4 an hour.”

Physical activity develops the executive function area of the brain responsible for focus, on task behavior and self regulation of emotions. How many students could benefit from more recess, play, and physical activity? All of them! Adults too!

I’m all about telling players the TRUTH, but you must also have solutions. If they can’t shoot/handle, then tell them, but show them ways they can improve too. Anyone can tell the truth, but great teachers provide solutions! Truth motivates, as long as you can provide solutions!

COACHES: The title "Coach” is a privilege. You have both a great opportunity and responsibility. Don't ever take it for granted. With great power comes great responsibility. You have an amazing opportunity to influence so many people. Be a positive leader. Stay encouraged.

COACHES: Treat your athletes with respect, dignity, and empathy even when they do not return the favor, or they act immature, or they cost you a win. Be the adult. Be the positive leader. Be the example. Be one of the reasons they become a good adult one day.

Players don’t usually quit their sport because they hate it. Sometimes they walk away due to the actions or inactions of their coach/staff. Sometimes it’s the daily culture & team environment. If this sounds familiar, you may need to reflect on your leadership & make big changes.

Players will make mistakes. Coaches will make mistakes. It's not the mistakes that matter, it's how you respond to them.

Coaches: It’s not about what you say to your players. It’s about what they hear. Much of that is in your delivery. You can say the same words to 15 kids & each one will hear something different. They have to KNOW you to hear you. The depth of your relationship tells the story!

A hugely important research report published today - 3x50mins of physical activity a week reduces depression in young people by one third. I ask again… please can we base policy on evidence thetimes.co.uk/article/school…

Players work best on a team with structure & order. Drama & chaos are detrimental to team culture & lead to a collapse of attitudes & behaviors inside your team. Coaches should present a calming force that focuses on responsibility & accountability. Teach your players by example!
