He explains why, in his view, biodigital agriculture and generative AI fundamentally clash with agroecology. Jim argues that these technologies are not neutral digital tools but extractive systems dependent on intensive energy use, mineral extraction, water consumption, and continuous data capture. He traces the shift from genetic engineering that tied seeds to chemicals, to digital platforms that now tie farmers to data driven prescriptions. Monsanto’s 2013 purchase of The Climate Corporation marked a turning point, repositioning the company as a data business through platforms such as Climate FieldView that collect farm level data and guide decisions through artificial intelligence. He links this transformation to consolidation among Bayer, Syngenta ChemChina, and Corteva, describing a growing lock in effect where farmers face fewer alternatives and rising costs, now extending into carbon and biodiversity markets. The discussion also explores what he calls “biopiracy 2.0,” where genetic material is sequenced, digitized, and recreated elsewhere, potentially bypassing earlier access and benefit sharing frameworks. Jim warns that Africa is increasingly treated as a frontier for biodiversity mining and data extraction, through private genetic databases, AI chatbots replacing extension services, and expanding digital infrastructure. He describes this trajectory as digital colonialism centered on data, minerals, water, and land. He concludes by urging civil society to strengthen food sovereignty through agroecology, community knowledge, and technological sovereignty rooted in local control rather than corporate platforms.
