Africa is the world’s youngest continent. By 2050, one quarter of the world’s population will live in Africa. This demographic transformation will shape the global economy, innovation, labour markets and international partnerships for decades to come. The EU and Africa are long-standing partners in peace, security, trade and in creating opportunities for the next generation. Our partnership is an investment in a shared future. This Africa Day, we look ahead together.

On 20-21 May, Sweden, as current chair, hosted the International Contact Group for the Great Lakes (ICG) with🇧🇪🇩🇰🇪🇺🇫🇷🇩🇪🇳🇱🇸🇪🇨🇭🇬🇧🇺🇸 in Stockholm. The meeting brought together Special Envoys, UNSE Xia @un_greatlakes, representatives of ongoing mediation efforts - including AU mediator Togo, Qatar and the US - alongside invited experts and @FBAFolke. The meeting demonstrated a shared commitment to coordinated international support for peace in the Great Lakes region. This morning, RDB Deputy CEO @JulianaMuganza met with Virginie De Ruyt, the European Commission’s Acting Head of Unit for East and Central Africa at the Directorate General for International Partnerships, and team to discuss the increasing collaboration between the European Union and Rwanda across shared investment and development priorities. The meeting also reviewed recent cooperation initiatives, including the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) and the Global Gateway Investment Roadshow, as well as opportunities to advance engagements through the next programming cycle.

Today, Minister @tesirusagara received a delegation from the European Union led by Ms. Virginie de Ruyt, the European Commission's Director-General for International Partnerships for East and Central Africa. The discussions focused on reviewing ongoing development cooperation programmes in Rwanda and the new Global Gateway.

The Foreign Affairs Council in its Development configuration is taking place today in Brussels. EU development ministers are gathering to discuss the EU’s external action, from sustainable development in partner countries to the role of Global Gateway. Equality, participation and non-discrimination are at the heart of democracy. Yet across the world, too many LGBTIQ+ persons still face violence, discrimination, hate speech and stigmatisation simply for being who they are. In more than 65 countries, consensual same-sex relations remain criminalised. Where discrimination persists, democracy cannot fully thrive. The EU remains committed to defending the human rights of all LGBTIQ+ persons and to promoting inclusive and democratic societies for all. In her keynote at the #GlobalGateway roadshow, Minister @tesirusagara said Rwanda has laid the foundations for private sector-led growth but cannot accelerate alone. “Partners like @GlobalGateway share our ambition. Instruments like EFSD+ are trust-builders — when development finance institutions share risk with private investors, it signals confidence to the wider market. Through @Kigali_IFC, Rwanda is building a platform where capital is mobilised and investments flow confidently across Africa”.
