If you buy the new Ferrari Luce as a company car you can deduct 100% of the purchase price from your taxable profits…. So if your profits exceed £250k, buying a Luce would save you £125k in corporation tax. This ludicrous tax loophole is why so many new EV’s are sold. According to gov figures 78% of all EV’s are bought through a busienss. If this tax loophole didn’t exist the number of new EV’s being sold in the UK would be staggeringly lower.

@au_tom_otive The trend is only going one way though. And we should note also - ICE vehicles have been getting much heavier, and there are lots more of them.

@E_Analytics Of course heavier vehicles exact a greater toll on a road surface than lighter ones, but suggesting that 2 million marginally heavier BEVs (out of 37 million+ vehicles) are to blame for all our potholes is daft.

[People]: “Nobody’s buying electric cars!” [Same people]: “There are so many electric cars that they’re causing all our potholes!” It’s amazing that someone as intelligent as Clarkson buys into this nonsense.

@conormolloy Trading down a lighter BEV is a valid car buyer decision, that would help the environment.

@b280c_2 It hasn't been debunked, as BEVs are, as a matter of simple empirical fact, about 400 kg heavier than a normal car. Depends a bit on whether the comparison is like-for-like or what people are actually buying, but the answer is essentially the same.

Disappointing comment from Clarkson, ‘The EV’s are heavier and are to blame” rhetoric. He quotes “enormous weight of electric cars” I thought that had been debunked a while ago.🙄

@AndyatAuto @_HenryBolton @MayorofLondon @Ed_Miliband Poor maintenance does effect tyre wear in terms of larger particles, but there are no enough HGV-miles to dominate cars - the weight of BEVs is critical at the aggregate level. Especially for nanoparticle emissions, and particularly as car tyres are chemically more hazardous.
