Davos is a small town in Switzerland, no bigger than Voi or Molo. Despite its remote location and low population, it hosts the World Economic Forum annually, bringing together top global leaders to discuss pressing world issues and set the tempo for the year ahead.
The event is so successful that delegates often travel as far as 150 kilometres to secure accommodation.
Held in the third week of January, temperatures drop to as low as minus seven degrees, and the landscape is entirely white. Delegates remain chilled throughout the event, their breath resembling moving chimneys, churning hot air into the cold air.
From mid this year, Kenya will be commissioning a world-class conference facility at the Bomas of Kenya grounds. With a capacity of over 5,000 delegates, the facility will give Nairobi hosting rights for major global events throughout the year. With giraffes peeping across the road and mischievous monkeys hanging from trees, it is bound to be a major attraction.
We will require an additional 2,000-bed capacity and skilled manpower to support these events. With these facilities in place, a new city will be born, and our kin next door will have reason to be proud of us. A new Davos.
