That’s great, but there won’t be any small businesses or cafe’s left to employ people unless you’re also subsidising them to cover these penalty rates? Small business pays tax on tax on tax, while at the same time dealing with inflation on COGS and rapidly declining retail spending. It’s probably the worst time in 20 years to hike penalty rates if you really want this to work long term. Or, perhaps you only want the big corporate businesses to remain in Australia? If so, you’re on the right path I guess, govt seems to only care about Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings and the like.

Penalty rates helped me get through uni. When I was a student, I often worked the Saturday night shift at Pancakes on the Rocks between 11pm and 7am. Giving up a weekend was worth it because of penalty rates. They meant I could study and still pay the bills. I know how much they matter. I’m proud we’ve introduced new laws to protect penalty rates for minimum and award wage workers. Because the people who give up their nights, weekends and holidays deserve fair pay.

@Optus 10 different numbers called to your business centres and every call hung up or ended with a message telling me to use the optus myapp (which is not working after upgrading my business account in store). How much patience are you expecting businesses to have?

@Adeena03 @sallymcmanus I'm in the group paying all my staff sick leave that they didn't have. Obviously no production while I'm paying staff to stay home. Yes I had to take out a big loan to afford it.

This is why we need paid pandemic leave. So many people will have nothing if they are required to isolate for seven days with Covid. How is this fair or reasonable? How can we limit the spread if we do not support people to isolate? A rethink is needed.
