There are major doctor shortages in the NHS, partly because pay is so low. No-one who wants to defend the NHS would keep doctors' or nurses' pay so low. Resident doctors reject Streeting's please and go ahead with strike theguardian.com/society/2025/n…

9 out of 10 nurses have rejected @wesstreeting’s pay award. Doctors and nurses are united in the fight for fair pay. If the Government wants to fix NHS staffing and retain the workforce, it starts with pay that reflects the value of the work we do. theguardian.com/society/2025/j…

So all that press briefing you and your team did about being furious, wanting to ‘break’ doctors, and how “your full attention” would be elsewhere now… All of that was you staying at the table and trying to find a way through that’s acceptable to both parties was it?! 🤔
Wes Streeting@wesstreeting

The doctors’ strikes have ended and the BMA have invited me back to the negotiating table, which is ironic because I never left. I’ve written to them today to continue the conversation where they left it, before they inflicted five days of harm on patients and the NHS.

The sad irony being that full pay restoration for resident doctors would cost less than this. At just £1.3bn approx if you did it overnight. And to be clear, @BMAResidents aren’t even asking for it overnight. They’re happy to negotiate a journey via a multiyear deal. #WinWin
Dr Shivam Sharma@DocShivSharma

Doctors are fleeing the NHS. Every year, 20 000 doctors are leaving the profession prematurely - many because their pay no longer reflects the weight of the job. The real question isn’t whether we can afford to pay doctors. It’s whether we can afford the cost of losing them.

✊Solidarity with striking @BMAResidents doctors! Resident doctors are overworked and underpaid. The government has a responsibility to restore their pay after decades of austerity. Firefighters stand with NHS resident doctors.

Wait …what! Food, training & job security part of negotiations with Resident Drs These are basics for any job, they are not perks, or negotiating tools Imagine saying the opposite! What does this say about the current situation for Resident Drs? @wesstreeting Fix it anyway!
Jack Elsom@JackElsom

EXCL: Wes Streeting’s offer to the BMA in full - including cheaper lunches! This is what the doctors’ union rejected in favour of strikes: thesun.co.uk/news/politics/…

1. A thread. As a Professor of Cardiology and senior consultant i fully support resident doctors in their strike action. Newly qualified doctors of today: ➡️ earn 40% less than their newly qualified assistants ➡️ earn £18/ hr ➡️ financially they are worse off than when I was newly qualified 25 years ago, 🛑I didn't have £100k of debt 🛑I had free accommodation 🛑 my take-home pay wasn't that much different to theirs

From 2008-2023 there was a constant theme of Consultant pay erosion and stagnation. The only time this began to change was when members were united and determined to take action. The @BMA_Consultants indicative ballot starts 21st July - vote YES to show support for action.
Mike Henley 🤨@trentconsultant

Until 23/24 colleagues were saying ‘it’s not the right time, let’s keep our powder dry’, this years award was less than RPI and CPIH of the same month and less than average pay rises in private sector. The graph shows you what will happen.

Junior docs today earn barely more than I did in 1996 after I graduated med school. I did not have to pay tuition fees, parking charges and I was provided with hospital accommodation. Resident doctors are paid less than the PAs who assist them. #isupportthestrike
Wes Streeting@wesstreeting

After a 28.9% pay rise thanks to a Labour government, patients and the public will be dismayed that the BMA is choosing to strike - and so am I. I have written to the BMA today reaffirming our preference to work together to improve their working lives and rebuild our NHS.

Predictable scenario @wesstreeting could have avoided -last July: refused to agree future years -last Dec: evidence to DDRB ref 2.8% and no ‘journey to fair pay’ -April: DDRB known, refusing to negotiate @BMAResidents call to negotiate. Empowered w/ mandate to strike if ignored
Resident Doctors@BMAResidents

The results are in: we have a clear mandate to strike. More than 90% of you who voted in our ballot, voted YES. You’ve made it clear: enough is enough. Our fight for full #PayRestoration for resident doctors in England continues.

Just heard BBC Today Henry Zeffman saying NHS Pay Review Body likely to recommend about 3%. RPI is currently 3.2%. All eyes on the DDRB. We need roughly 14% to recover vs RPI over three years and 8% against even CPI as a staging post.

🚨 BREAKING: Resident doctors in England have re-entered a pay dispute with the Government. Why? Because progress is being stonewalled by the continued delay in the publication of the DDRB's pay recommendations. Trust must be rebuilt. Publish the DDRB now bma.org.uk/residentspay
