Nigeria is sitting on different goldmines. And I’m not talking solid minerals now. Benue prides itself as the “food basket of the nation.” It has tons of oranges, mangoes, & other variety of fruits exported out of the state. A wild range. Benue has cash crops wasting away. Post harvest losses means that farmers will have to sell them at very cheap prices. Go to Kwande, Vandeikya, & Gboko road to makurdi; you see thousands of fruits littered everywhere. Benue has tomatoes in endless supply. Hyacinth Alia has no excuse. You shouldn’t just follow the mandate. Build local capacity. You can build an industrial complex on PPP model. Build a mini-grid around the cluster for reliable electricity. This should not be another rocket science. Benue should be a leading exporter of ‘processed food.’ Nigeria won’t achieve a $1 trillion economy without its food basket states unlocking their huge untapped potentials.
