I just read that Kano State has established its own airline, few weeks after Sokoto State announced theirs, mirroring other states like Enugu, Cross River and the debutant of state-owned airlines, Akwa Ibom, and I kept wondering what is really the craze about establishing airlines. Airlines are among the most capital-intensive and difficult businesses to run, even for private investors. At a time when most states are grappling with poor infrastructure, rising unemployment, weak healthcare, struggling schools, and declining agricultural productivity, it is hard to see why owning an airline should rank among their highest priorities. Prestige projects rarely put food on people’s tables. Imagine the impact if the same resources were invested in agriculture and its value chain, rural roads, irrigation, storage facilities, agro-processing industries, and reliable power for manufacturers. Those investments create jobs, strengthen food security, expand exports, and grow local economies in a way an airline simply cannot. Governments should focus less on owning businesses and more on creating the conditions for businesses to thrive.
