Kemi Badenoch’s attack on Bridget Phillipson at PMQs today lays bare something deeper about the direction of their politics. I’m proud that this Labour government has the most state-schooled Cabinet in the post-war era - people who didn’t grow up with privilege, but earned their place through hard work. That’s the difference between us and them. This Labour government believes background should never be a barrier to opportunity. Social mobility isn’t a slogan - it’s the whole point of a fair society. And yet too often it feels like there are those who want to sneer at it, undermine it, and drag us backwards. We should be celebrating opportunity, not trying to hold it back.

This is a great point by Mike Tapp. If Andy Burnham becomes Labour leader and then Prime Minister without a general election, millions of British voters won't have voted for him, or even know who he is. That's not how democracy should work. A change of Prime Minister through an internal party coup should automatically trigger a General Election.

It seems as though Labour and Conservatives are intent on destroying themselves.

A few things happening at once that people should connect. Russia is now linked to the arson attacks on the Prime Minister's house and car last year. Shocker. And we all saw what happened the moment that story broke. Our feeds flooded with a different story about who the men were and why they did it. That's the operation. The arson is one half. The disinformation campaign is the other. Flood the zone, muddy the water, get the country shouting at itself instead of asking who is behind it. And at the same time, a chunk of the accounts pushing Scottish independence on X went dark the night Israel hit Iran's nuclear sites. Ask yourself why. Why would hostile states be interested in sowing division across the country? This is exactly what I mean when I say defence is the thread underneath everything now. Again, it isn't tanks on a border. It's an arson attack on the PM's front door and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns in the replies. It's the argument about breaking up our country being run out of Tehran. This is why resilience matters. And it's bigger than just factchecking a tweet. It's energy we can rely on. Industry we actually own. Institutions that are rock solid. Communities that don't split and fracture the moment someone pushes them. A country that is built to take a punch. That's the job now.

What i find the most unsettling about AI is our place in the world. What happens to us once AI surpasses us? What would be the point of living? Picture living a life where your intelligence and imagination's pointless. It'd be setting us on the path for devolution.

@peterrhague Never underestimate small people. Many big datacentres in UK hire ex-ghurkas as security. If you try to barge past, these small, unassuming, middle-aged men can kill you in 6 different ways before you’ve gone 10 yards.

That copper appears to be a woman who is maybe 5’6” at most. The law abiding obey the instruction to pass through the detector. What if the people it’s targeted just barge past her? It’s not like they obey the ticket barriers.

It is trivial to explain why a LLM can never ever be conscious or intelligent. Utterly trivial. It goes like this - LLMs have zero causal power. Zero agency. Zero internal monologue. Zero abstracting ability. Zero understanding of the world. They are tools for conscious beings.

this way of relating to nature feels far too out of fashion. caring for the creatures of earth and earth itself is incredibly fatherly and manly, yet many men find ways to justify a childish disregard and destructiveness. this sense duty and respect toward nature is part of why i support things like shrimp welfare projects, cultured meat, etc. a good man doesn’t lack empathy for things less capable or intelligent than himself. we should be so awash in tech and abundance that we don’t think twice about doing these things, we should be so well-resourced that we can afford to treat every miraculous inhabitant of this planet with care
