@dyerjonathan @johngbennett Atm it’s more that the cold fronts won’t get north of the great divide. Pretty sure those first 4 years are double whammy dry from the Indian and pacific, 2015 +IOD, 2008 neither

@johngbennett @Eladyerg may correct me, but I think they are nearly all El Nino & Positive iod years. This one is neither. Just the cold fronts won't come any further north than Tasmania.

@craigyMallee pretty hard to get historic wind data Simon. This NOAA wind anomaly for the last 30 days shows its certainly been stronger westerly than normal. Interestingly a last 90 day graph is benign. The north position of highs for winter has led to greater westerly wind flow i reckon too

One of my pet peeves with R & D crews. If a farmer is courteous enough to allow you to do a trial on their property, please do the same back & spend 15-30 mins after harvest doing an emu pick of the site. ** where is the wire from the pegs that I could only find the tags for? 😬

@dyerjonathan Always use the Aug-Oct consecutive Jonathan, u want to know the historical finishes to the season and how they rank. Choosing the aug, sept, Oct and adding them up leads to erroneous stats particularly at the low and high deciles

Ok everyone, so I tripped over and fell down a statistical wormhole tonight guys and I need help to get out. Looking through the BOM rainfall data for Kaniva and considering what a Decile 3, 5 or 7 finish from August-October might look like. Here's the thing. If you treat the months as independent events and add them together you get a noticeably different number to if you just look at the historical Aug-Oct totals and do the percentiles on that list. So which one to use when scenario planning? The one on the right is the historical record of what's happened. So should use it right? But we all know that past performance is no indication of future performance. This is rainfall we're talking about here. Every month, even every weather system is a separate statistical event which may or may not be dependent on the others before it. Which one do the BOM use in forecasting? Any weather nerds that can comment? @windjunky @Eladyerg bom.gov.au/climate/outloo…
