@TheGingerBill @oxcrowx I get it, I like const because it easily maps to the code I want to write in my mind even if it doesn’t guarantee anything. It helps when working with others to express intent as well. Thanks for the replies tho, I do really enjoy Odin! I use it for a ton of hobby projects

@ElixirDiablo @oxcrowx const in C++ doesn’t give any true semantic guarantees, and at best only gives some people some help depending on their programming style. I’d want a language with a different memory model to have a decent immutability aspect. C-likes are not that.

I criticize lots of languages, including my favorite ones -- OCaml, Rust, Zig, C/C++, Go. It's you guys who have a thin skin and get annoyed by anyone criticizing Odin's unergonomic design. Also, you don't even listen to criticisms by users of Odin. See its forum.

@oxcrowx I just had a thought. It's a little extreme, so bear with me here. If you don't like Odin. Don't write Odin. OMG, that was rough. I'm glad I got through it though.

@TheGingerBill @oxcrowx Did you ever consider “promise” based immutability like const in c++?

@ElixirDiablo @oxcrowx Rust is an ML in disguise and its type system makes a lot more sense with immutability. Odin’s type system is in the C/Pascal family, so the memory model does not really benefit nor help with the kinds of immutability people say they want. It is a subtle point to explain, sadly.

@TheGingerBill @oxcrowx You make a great point about not going with the crowd, I cannot stand hearing people say. “That’s how we’ve always done it”. That being said how come you didn’t decide on immutable by default in Odin? I do like that aspect of rust.

Odin does not "neglect" "standard practices", but outright questions them. Just because many people think something is "good", does not mean it is. And you should be questioning that with the design of your language too. You might come to the same or different conclusions, but don't just "go with the crowd".

@skibidiblazor Yeah same, even my most libed up coworkers have negative views of immigrants now. They’ll say stuff like, companies shouldn’t be hiring them just because they’re cheaper, right after saying shit like, you can’t be racist to white people

@valigo Optional parameters are there to fix issues within the API. If you start with them, you’ve cocked up. But I don’t think they’re bad.

@VBierschwale If you’re in good standing meaning no felonies, and you’re a veteran I would look into doing federal work on USA jobs or clearance jobs. If you have the right skills a company will get you a clearance

How are you making a living when you can't find a job in technology? I'm curious about that because I'm wondering how you're surviving. As you know, I'm trying to fix lawnmowers, do some programming when I have it to do, and build my websites. But even that is a struggle as I got paid $200 yesterday, bought 40 worth of groceries, 15 worth of gas, and some mower parts and I'm broke again. Surely somebody has found a solution, and no I don't want to hear about your crypto or trading solutions as I like the market, but you can't trade with the money you need to live on.

It's not like that. A finished product with polish still requires an organic timeline. You can only compress it so much... but during that time you can work on 5 projects instead of 1, and outside you area of expertise. It's more obvious if you're freelancing. However, if you just have one fixed job with no need or ambition to do much more than that, then the difference is not as much...

@sircalebhammer It’s so much worse than you think, everytime I run into someone I knew from the military they tell me about how they have 90% disability and I gotta get in touch with [guy] because he’ll help me scam the VA. Always guys working desk jobs for 4 years. Have the courage to hate vets

Nope. It’s not even asked about in our show form. We don’t ask about it in pre-interviews. Half the time we don’t even know what % disability they have, or if they have it at all before filming. But FA has people on with bad finances, don’t be surprised those are the abusers. That doesn’t mean all vets are abusers. I’ve called for MORE VA funding specifically, but I’m also against fraud. Supportive vets and being against abuse can exist at the same time- and actually should.
Max the World-Weary@max_schneiter

@StraightLineUSA At this point I have to assume Caleb Hammer is deliberately seeking out guests who have these VA disability backgrounds because it happens way too often to be a coincidence. This is likely propaganda to push the idea that the VA should be defunded.

You're still thinking in terms of AI assisted development, and that's not where we're going. AI already writes better code than humans, but the scope of the task has to be right-sized. We still need architects to write specs and review the output but the code generation will be autonomous. One quality engineer will be able to maintain multiple complex, parallel projects instead of one at a time. The output will be much larger than 20% per capita but the cost of the agents will be higher too.

The AI labor replacement theory makes absolutely no sense to me Here is the simple math Let’s say an engineer making $300K/yr was generating $500K in P&L output for me. Now I arm that engineer with $20K in input to make him 20% more productive My total engineering cost goes to $320K/yr but the output is now $600K (+20%) Because of AI, my ROI on hiring engineers just went up massively. As a CEO, that should make me want to hire more engineers, not less What am I missing here? Genuinely curious about people’s thoughts

@CL207 More like you’re giving them money to do more cool things. If they do cool things with your money they will grow it for you, if they don’t you lose that money. You’re taking risk and lending them some money. So it’s not free loading

@KyleTrainEmoji Let’s say I borrow 300k to buy my house. Most of the interest is front loaded so you’re not paying down principal that much in the beginning. Then 4 years later I suddenly need to move for life reasons and need to sell my house. If I’m underwater I’m stuck. I can’t sell.

@rats7 Idk if this is true but I feel like doing ads has got to be a great return on investment time wise. You show up for probably a day do a 30 sec ad and get paid a bunch. That’s probably why they do it
