to break it down further: Pretty people do not experience their looks, they have no personal reference point for their looks because attractiveness is a communal commodity, a publicly owned thing. They experience only the social acceptance and approval that their looks provide. So if they perceive *any* disruption in their social acceptance, they think it must be their looks that are the problem, and they attack each feature until it "behaves" again to draw social approval. They often overshoot, to try to make the feature the "most" attractive it can be, which is often a wildly exaggerated version of it. With that exaggerated adjustment --which becomes functionally a disfigurement -- they both address the "problem" of social inclusion and they punish the misbehaving body, as in many cases of dysmorphia or OCD (extreme nail-biting, skin picking, and hair pulling are among similar self-disfigurements to punish the "misbehaving" body.)
