1. We haven't really felt the effects yet. 2. It will be compared to Covid. 3. BUT, Covid was a temporary restriction on capacity. - This is a destruction of underlying capacity. So will last many years, not 2. 4. When it eventually comes back - energy will flow East, not West.

Hopefully Iran’s missile threat to UK will be eradicated by US & Israel — without our support. But we know other potential enemies have missiles able to hit us. We also know drones are prolific. The threat from both will increase. Britain lacks adequate air defences, which must obviously be addressed. Worth noting also that the majority of missile & drone casualties in Israel have been inflicted by people not getting to shelters in time. Last time UK mainland came under missile & drone attack was in 1945 (V1 and V2), when we had bomb shelters. Has our government addressed a shelter system, together with associated warning system?

I am very wary of reports that the UK is now within range of Iranian ballistic missiles. But if the reports are true, let’s be in no doubt: the UK has no defences against such missiles. No dedicated national ballistic missile defence (BMD) system for intercepting intermediate- or intercontinental-range threats aimed at the homeland. No ground-based interceptors (like US THAAD or Patriot systems in Europe) deployed in Britain for this purpose. In theory our T-45 warships could provide some cover. But most are currently undeployable or not in UK waters. Leaving us defenceless from ballistic missile attack. Another massive military failure of the political class of all recent governments.

I told the PM in Commons 3 weeks ago that Iran is a permanent threat to UK Now truth is out that their ballistic missile range is much longer than many believed Now even Starmer must realise that Tehran has to be properly disarmed by US and Israel telegraph.co.uk/opinion/2026/0…

Games > Books Some games have scripts so massive, they make books look like a light read. For comparison, the entire LOTR trilogy has ~481,000 words: 2.2M — KC: Deliverance II 2.0M — Baldur's Gate 3 1.2M — Disco Elysium 1.1M — Animal Crossing 1.0M — Baldur's Gate 2 1.0M — Cyberpunk 2077 950K — Planescape: Torment 740K — Dragon Age: Origins 650K — Fallout: New Vegas 450K — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Narrative designers write modern epics and voice actors record absolute libraries.

The Hotlzman Shield in Dune is one of the perfect examples of adding a tiny thing to a setting to get a vibe you want out of it. In Dune's case: - Holtzman Shields stop fast moving objects. - Lasguns (particle beam guns in Dune) can cause a nuclear explosion if they hit a shield, so they're not commonly used. - Melee is the dominant form of combat, trying to strike slow to penetrate the shields. - Projectile weapons exist but they're designed around boring through or disrupting shields, but a skilled combatant can deflect the slow moving projectiles. - Heavy artillery can still kill shielded humans through sheer transfer of force or heat, which the shield can't block. - Anti-vehicle weapons are built around these principles because the vehicle might be shielded. Dune codified the idea of high tech sci-fi where you still have melee and the idea of "oh here's this piece of technobabble that let's me have what I want in my sci-fi setting." Gundam's Minovsky Particle and Mass Effect's Element Zero owe the Holtzman Shield their existence.
Zack Stentz@MuseZack

A hugely underrated aspect of the Dune universe's appeal is how Frank Herbert built a world where people zip around the galaxy in spaceships but then fight each other with swords and knives. It makes everything 50 percent cooler than a world of ray guns and robots.

The chessboard as it stands looks like this: * Gas prices are irrevocably fucked due to recent escalations, prices are $60 apart between paper and physical oil due to heavy US market manipulation, but they can't do this forever, it's expensive * Trump needs to end this soon. He only has 1 unplayed card left, a direct assault on Kharg island and Iran's southwest shores * He's sending 8000 members with limited support to assault an extremely difficult to reach target, some 400 miles into the Persian Gulf, while Iran knows they're coming and has been digging in with UAVs, drones, missiles, fast attack boats, etc * The probability that it succeeds is very low. The probability that Trump backs off before going in is high. He wants a deal with Iran, however awful, if it can end the Strait closure * Iran won't concede an end until the threat of future attack is off the table, they know they can't pull this move off again. This necessarily means neutering Israel completely * The US can't concede that because of US state capture by Israel. Instead the conflict on the ground with Lebanon will likely decide if Israel surrenders or not * Knowing this, it tactically makes more sense for the US to send their Marines to Lebanon, and not to fight Iran at home * If the US can successfully defend Israel, they make both be forced into negotiations
