Building a championship team is legitimately just luck.
The Spurs got lucky they drafted Wemby.
OKC got lucky SGA became the best player in the league.
Denver got lucky a second round pick became Nikola Jokic.
It’s all about positioning yourself to get lucky.

I'm not necessarily "pro-tanking," because I'm aware it's an imperfect strategy that often doesnt work. But it annoys me that 90% of Anti-Tankers sound like this: "Smart teams dont NEED lottery luck. For example, look at this team that got incredibly lucky in a different way..."

Even if OKC doesn't move up in the lottery, they also have the 18th and 37th picks + all their future draft capital + young pieces on the roster. A consolidation trade for a pick in the #4 to #9 range is more within reach for the Thunder.

NBA Draft Lottery night just got a lot more interesting now that the Clippers lost in the play-in. The Thunder own the Clippers pick, which will have the 11th (9.4% top 4) or 12th (7.1%) odds. Last year, that’s the slot the Mavs had to move up for Cooper Flagg. Can you imagine?
