@SummrWrites It happened to us driving in dallas while driving through looking to relocate from CA. we didn't even know we were on a toll road. Except TX didn't threaten to take our car

True story: California just told me to pay them $826 because I drove on their roads a few months ago or they were going to put a lien on my car. When I called them and said I had never been notified that I owed them $26 for driving on a toll road, the guy on the phone laughed and said “We don’t notify you. Everyone knows how much they owe.” I said, “I don’t live in California. I don’t ‘just know’ how much I owe for driving on a toll road.” To which he said, “Oh.” Just “Oh.” So I said, “Now that I’ve been notified, can I pay you the $26?” To which he said, “No, that’s impossible now.” So I was never notified how much money I owed them, but because I didn’t pay them an amount of money I was supposed to just magically know, they wanted me to give them nearly one thousand dollars under threat of taking my vehicle. 💀💀 That’s California. He did so helpfully “reduce the charges” and I think maybe next time I want to see the ocean, I’ll find a different one.

@SummrWrites Toll roads aren't very common here, but if I remember correctly from my youth you couldn't enter a toll road without paying first. How is there a toll road you can drive without there being some barrier to entrance and how is the cost $26?
