Nevada's "Swiss Alps" are about to be handed to the oil and gas industry. And it passed by a single Senate vote. The Ruby Mountains are glacier-carved peaks soaring above sapphire alpine lakes. Wildflower meadows. Crystal streams. Nevada's largest mule deer herd. Bighorn sheep. Mountain goats. Lahontan cutthroat trout — threatened and irreplaceable. The ancestral homeland of the Te-Moak Tribe of the Western Shoshone. Hunters, anglers, hikers, skiers — people have traveled from across the country to be here for generations. There is nowhere else in Nevada like this. On May 11, by one Senate vote, the Biden-era Public Lands Rule was repealed. The rule that required conservation to be weighed equally alongside drilling, mining, and logging. Gone. And the Ruby Mountains — 264,000 acres — were already open to oil and gas leasing. Geologists say the area has low to no oil potential. Industry has shown little interest. So why strip the protection? The fired Lake Mead ecologist said it plainly: "We have to make sure that we don't do something that we can't undo." Once these lands are leased — they're locked out of conservation for up to 30 years. You cannot un-drill a glacier-carved canyon. If this land has low oil potential and industry still isn't rushing in — what exactly is being taken, and who profits when it's gone? #DemsUnited
