@Ethelbrait1941 I suppose, though I do try to use the regular past tense any time it's at all plausible (dived, sneaked, weaved, pleaded, etc.) in hopes that the language will shed a few more irregulars in my lifetime.

Never stop saying "dozen" and "half dozen". Never stop using the word you read in an old novella. Never stop using your regional jargon. Don't succumb to an internationalized English stripped of its whimsy and romanticism in the name of streamlining global commerce.

A LOT of people are dunking on Elon for this. They are making a big mistake. I dislike Elon, but this is a silly attack. Common sense should have stopped people from making it. Common sense is in short supply. Folks are claiming that when "Maye Musk's" tweet refers to "your mom," "she's" referring to Elon's mom, which is, of course, herself, which would be pretty weird. So, they conclude Elon must be using alt accounts. According to this theory, when Elon sent the tweet, he thought he was logged into his dad's account, which is why he was referring to "your mom," but he accidentally logged into his mom's account and ended up looking foolish. Superficially plausible, except for one giant flaw... According to this theory, "your mom," Elon's mom, Maye Musk, was "cleaning toilets in a Liverpool boarding house as a child." But Maye Musk was born in Canada and grew up in South Africa! Maye Musk was never cleaning Liverpool toilets! Who was cleaning toilets? Elon's DAD's mom. His paternal grandmother. His grandmother (Cora Robinson) grew up in Liverpool! In other words, when Maye Musk refers to "your mom," it's a typo, and she's clearly referring to "your dad's mom," who is the only one of the two of them who grew up in Liverpool! This is all very obvious once you look at their bios, but people who don't like Musk want to believe the worst of him, so they jumped on the story. I admit, my first reaction was glee, "Aha, silly Elon, this is awesome," but I knew I had to double-check before tweeting a dunk. And immediately the theory fell apart. I wouldn't bother writing this long clarification, but Maye Musk's tweet has received hundreds of replies making fun of Elon's supposed error. I've also seen big accounts spreading this story. Be careful out there, people. Don't spread misinformation!

@salltweets @Jebadoo2 Yeah...helps to remember that this is the easiest it will ever be, and it all reverts back to hard mode if you give in. I missed them for years and kept trying to trick myself into a relapse. It's so nice when the craving fades away into thoughts you can bat away effortlessly.

Amongst the best unscripted political speeches I have ever heard. Many said Kemi's focus on trans/CRT culture wars made her too divisive. But it's now clear it gave her the rare moral conviction to recognise what is real & defend what is right. Superb.

A grumpy man can control a family without ever raising his voice. He just has to make his displeasure expensive enough. A long silence at dinner. A ruined car ride. Soon, everyone starts pre-adjusting. The kids are told “not now” before they can ask. She chooses the restaurant he likes, the movie he won’t complain through, the route that avoids traffic because traffic makes him unbearable. This is how a household becomes organized around one person’s refusal to regulate themselves.

@FondOfBeetles If we're holding the line against invaders, I'd think most reds would stay and fight for all of the reasons you listed. Those reasons make it so wildly different than the original scenario that it's not even comparable. There's an actual peril to defend against here.

Interesting framing that results heavily in the “analogous” blue button position, IMO? It’s very far removed from the blue/red button scenario (hence quote marks around “analogous”), but allows aspects to be analysed? • visible social signalling; people can track cooperation levels; knowledge gap closed. • heavy social stigma on retreat position; remainers will be lauded as heroes. • being “already in the risky system” as default flips something about perceptions of agency and gain/loss; no change results in collective win. Red pressers who are remainers here: which of these feels most relevant (or something else?).

1/ ATTENTION: I am now in a fight with Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings, in the sense that he posted about me once on Bluesky and I have written a long response. Joking aside I think there are some pretty fundamental issues at stake here and I vehemently reject his approach.

@AriLamm Probably a good deal of overlap between ppl who assume "Goldstein" is offensive and ppl who find the goblins anti-Semitic. That immediate connecting of dots between the mere idea "Jewish" and every offensive caricature under the sun, it's such a tell.
