The sun causes a high contrast in photos and washes out the stars. They are seriously in the sky with the sun. However, they were at the moon during a total solar eclipse. Which helped block out some of the sun. In this picture you can see what looks like some stars, but also Venus!

Adrian Fontes Maricopa County is 9,224 Sq Miles roughly the size of New Hampshire but with 4x the population of 4.5 million.
