I joined @coinbase 9 weeks ago with a vital goal: fixing unnecessary account restrictions. If you're on CT, you know how significant this issue has been for users. I myself am a Coinbase user and our restriction experience is not meeting my own bar. The goal is clear: Account freezes should be rare, limited to situations that warrant them, primarily when we're legally obligated (e.g. sanctions or court orders) or protecting users (e.g. from scams or account compromises). We're committed to getting this right. Recent releases have enabled us to make huge improvements without sacrificing our legal and regulatory obligations, or our commitment to safety. In short: - We've reduced the frequency of account locks by ~82% so far, and new changes are currently rolling out that will bring further reductions. - We've made significant investments in our ML models, infrastructure, modeling, and teams. So far, we've improved the precision and recall of all our models, and are seeing fewer restrictions/freezes as a result. - We've established guardrails and checks/balances to ensure we maintain focus on this and won't stop iterating. - We're also tackling this problem from the other end by moving processes like source-of-funds verification and enhanced KYC into the app. This means most restriction types will have self-service flows to remove restrictions, which is much more efficient than previous options. There’s so much more for us to do to get to a great state, Expect further updates soon!

@kvncnls Yeah I can agree with that. I think it's a combination of both, it's too easy to mess up and then when you do it can't be undone. Multi-faceted problem for sure.

@Evuls2 Legibility is huge. But the irreversible actions make Web3 so much harder to use than Web2. If someone steals my credit card, I can report it and I'll get help easily. Not the case with Web3. If you mess up, it's over.

Web3’s biggest UX problem is that basic on-chain interactions are stress-inducing. Everyone double-checks which address we’re using, which address we’re sending to, which network we’re on, the gas fees and confirmation messages. It’s stress-inducing because basic interactions are irreversible. And to make things worse, links/addresses could be scams. Many Web3 veterans get stressed. Imagine how stressful and confusing it is for beginners! We don’t have this same stress in Web2. We’re not regularly second-guessing our interactions with the web. In most things Web2, we are trusting someone else entirely for our processes. It’s THEIR responsibility and we just expect it to work… and for some reason, this gives us comfort. The irony of this statement isn’t lost on me btw. In Web3, we don’t have this same level of trust in the system because we place all the responsibility of irreversible actions on ourselves— and clearly, many people don’t trust their selves. Some of you probably forgot your keys/phone/wallet at home today. So how can you trust yourself with something as irreversible as sending crypto from one wallet to another? That responsibility is heavy and it’s something all beginners have to learn to get into this space.
