Thought I’d share with anyone who cares to listen. Normally I just say dumb stuff but this is important and if you have seasonal depression you should take note. Don’t let it destroy your life. If you work from home, and even if you don’t, it’s a simple fix, coworkers might make fun of you on camera, but boy is it worth it.
It wasn’t until the day I had a huge freakout, crying and feeling something was DEEPLY WRONG, I got into my car and turned off my phone, and decided I’d fly to Miami because I desperately needed the sun, that it clicked I needed to do something about this. I didn’t fly to Miami that day, thank God, but people don’t realize just how bad this can get.
I had severe anxiety and depression from SAD, I wondered for years why I’d have mental breakdowns which happened to coincide with college finals unfortunately, it wasn’t until I got a career and married and it didn’t go away despite life being good that I realized it was something going on. I just assumed it was test anxiety or something. The default is to assume it’s something external when you’re feeling that way. It isn’t necessarily true!
But I’m telling you, and please actually listen, it’s the intensity of light, don’t worry about all this spectrum stuff. Aim for 10,000 lux (which is just a function of lumens in the cubic meters of your space). Just buy some LED 7-way splitters and buy 200w equivalent LED bulbs. Like 28 of them. Then I bought two LED corn bulbs (actually use 200W but have an insane light output. Then plug all this in, in a 10x10 room it gives me about that magic 10,000 lux light level.
You can download free apps on you phone that calculate lux. Midday summer is 100,000 lux.
I’ve since moved my office and so I spend maybe 5 minutes in this room every day in the morning, and even that is sufficient to keep me sane.
This totally changed my life. It looks goofy but I’m serious. I just thought I was a literal psycho and these problems have totally gone away. I haven’t experienced any seasonal depression since I bought these lights.

as we enter the winter months, remember that seasonal depression is a choice, and you can choose not to have it by going to tractor supply, where they sell heat bulbs intended for chickens that have basically the same spectrum light as a red light therapy bulb for 10 bucks
