🔥 In his address to STUC Congress this afternoon First Minister, John Swinney, led with the commitment of £30 million to develop the role of Scotland’s firefighters. In doing so he recognised the relentless campaigning and lobbying of the FBU to deliver for our members✊🔥🚒#stuc26 @fbunational @FbuEast @FBUScotNorth @WestScotlandFBU @FBU_Scotland_EC @AngusSproul @JMcKScotRegSec @UnityConsults @JohnSwinney @fire_scot @AdamT9372

🔥FBU Regional Women’s rep, Kerry McCrone, spoke powerfully at STUC Congress today in support of motions tackling violence at work and defending dignity for train drivers. Firefighters stand in solidarity, recognising the same challenges raised. It’s time for employers to step up and address the real risks our members face every day🔥🚒 @fbunational @FbuEast @FBUScotNorth @WestScotlandFBU @FBU_Scotland_EC @AngusSproul @JMcKScotRegSec @UnityConsults @AdamT9372

🔥 The FBU welcomes the SNP’s commitment to expand the role of firefighters. Our members have long led the case for a properly funded expansion of duties, and this is an important step in the right direction. A new deal for firefighters has the potential to be transformative — strengthening emergency response and working with partners such as the Scottish Ambulance Service and the NHS. However, the FBU are clear that this must be backed by real investment. Expanding the role of firefighters cannot be done on the cheap. It requires increased staffing, properly resourced services, and a clear commitment to halt station closures and ensure facilities are fit for purpose. The FBU will continue to press all parties to match ambition with funding. Protecting Scotland’s firefighters means protecting Scotland’s communities🔥🚒 @fbunational @FBUScotNorth @FbuEast @WestScotlandFBU @FBU_Scotland_EC @AngusSproul @UnityConsults @fire_scot @scotgov @JMcKScotRegSec @JohnSwinney

SFRS have launched a consultation with proposals to close fire stations, change fire cover, and remove appliances. Following the removal of 166 firefighter roles in 2023, these additional cuts threaten to leave an already stretched service without adequate staff and resources to effectively respond to incidents and protect public safety.

It's fantastic to see SFRS & FBU continued commitment to our working together framework. These 3 clips sum up what we can achieve and outline the excellent work being undertaken to understand health risks from contaminants and protect FF's across Scotland.

Research indicates that 136 firefighters - one in four - who were exposed to toxic smoke at Grenfell are now suffering from long term health disorders. Professor Anna Stec from the University of Central Lancashire emphasises the need for regular health monitoring. "Given that firefighting is classified as a carcinogenic occupation, introducing regular health monitoring for UK firefighters is essential."
