There was no authentic vision. It wasnt built out of any true desire to improve the game or solve a problem. When the start point is sports washing then your marketing team has to manufacture a meaning out of thin air. Hence the nonsense team format, brand name and a vaccuous statement about growing the game without any actual proof of how. Playing 54 holes instead of 72 is like a new NFL saying theyre gonna play 3 quarters instead of 4. Just utterly pointless bifurcation.

I think two lessons from LIV will be ... 1. You can't solve time problems with money. It took 40 years of playing the Masters before people *really* started to care. You can't speed that up by signing big checks. You can't microwave history. 2. A modicum of humility goes a long way. Thumping your chest out of the gate and saying "we're gonna redefine a 200-year-old sport over the next few seasons" is not a good strategy. It might eventually be true (spoiler: it wasn't), but it does the opposite of what it probably feels like it's going to do. Most fans are smart, and immense hubris is rarely attractive in any business setting.

@FPLMaineRoad Same. Bigger conversations need to be had at PGMOL about how they openly incentivise diving. Foden penalty at southampton comes to mind... But plenty of other examples.

Part of me loves that Haaland didn’t react to the headbutt, but if he goes down that’s the easiest red card and 3 match ban ever.

Been on WC32 for 3 weeks. It gets to 625pm and I realise its a Friday deadline. Had to panic draft template FC. Shame I wanted to make some spicier punts but just been too disengaged with the game lately. Rank 12k, be nice to get first ever top 10k but up against it with 1 FT to manage from now on...

@BradMayorFPL I think people think City away at chelsea is a lot worse than it actually is... And then because of defcon starting Hill or Senesi at Arsenal is totally fine.

Wishing WC32’ers good luck not having Arsenal players for this run because you have to prioritize getting Palace players for the double in 36. Personally I’ll have three Arsenal players. I like having good players with good fixtures.

The template will be Haaland, Semenyo + O’Reilly and it’ll be very difficult to go against! Cherki maybe? City are always going to be a tricky team to target differentials with anyway! Haaland TC for those with it though… 👀

This really shouldnt be a controversial take. The Premier League has never once atttacted a peak age player who was top 3 in the world. Madrid will always be that club. The minute someone in the PL becomes Ballon Dor levels they leave; Henry, CR7 and now Rodri Doesnt diminish the standing of Salah Rooney KDB etc. All elite world class talents but never top 3 demanded players in world football.

Been watching footy for 25+ years, and the BEST players in the world have never played in the Premier League From R9 to Dinho to Messi to Mbappe/Yamal From Zizou to Kaka to Xavi/Iniesta to Pedri/Vitinha In fact I would say with the exception of prime Henry and CR7, the PL has never had a top 3 player in the world at any given time
Dougie Critchley@DougieCritchley

Unsurprisingly as he works his way back from an ACL injury, Rodri hasn't been at his best this season. But make no mistake about it, losing Rodri, the 2nd Premier League player to win the Ballon D'Or since 2001, to Real Madrid... In the same summer as Salah leaves and within 3 years of Kane and De Bruyne's departures... Would be a yet another sign that the absolute BEST players in the world, are playing outside of England.

@FPLfrasier Big difference here is Liverpool have zero titles without Salah. United still have those 3 without Ronaldo.

@ThisIsAgam This will always be our golden generation I think... We have won more with the crop that came after these lot but in terms of aesthetics and loyalty to the club I am not sure we will see another crop like this...

In an era where players start twerking for Madrid or Barca the second a microphone is put in their face, never forget the ones who were City through and through. 🩵 - Vincent Kompany - David Silva - Sergio Aguero - Pablo Zabaleta - Fernandinho - Kevin De Bruyne - Bernardo Silva No drama. No dream move quotes. No disrespect. Just pure heritage. This is the standard.

Surely off the ball running is something that can be coached though? Saka has the natural top end speed and agility to make the same kind of runs Sterling did. Remember seeing a great clip of Pep coaching Sterling on how to fake dropping deep by keeping body in a side on position where can then quickly pivot in behind. Gordon is probably a closer version of Raheem, the pace and movement and work rate but awful at finishing...

@FPL_Tranquilo @InvertTheWing With respect to Off ball running and speed, Sterling had it naturally. Don't see that in Saka, not even slightly. Look at all of Sterling's hughlight reels, he is constantly on the move, from Liverpool days even.

England miss a Raheem Sterling profile. In fact, football in general misses a Raheem Sterling profile. One of the most underrated players of the generation. And one of the best wingers of the decade, but I never see his name being mentioned in conversations. Maybe it is the lack of aesthetics. A winger with elite off the ball movement, capable of completely demolishing high lines, stretching the pitch, but also penetrating the box 1v1. Closest thing is perhaps Barcola, in terms of the movement.

@SamLee My biggest worry with Rodri is too many City fans think Nico G is the replacement... luckily theyre not in charge of recruitment. Pep has dropped him at every opportunity hes had since he joined and is clearly not convinced. I think we need to think bigger to replace Rodri.

The Rodri answers about Madrid felt inevitable to me. He’s done a couple of post-match interviews with Spanish reporters in the last fortnight, which is quite rare, and it felt to me - and I may be wrong - that he was ready to drop some kind of hint about his future. International breaks are usually good for that. I feel City’s squad doesn’t need much work this summer as it’s very strong, but if Rodri and Bernardo go then it’s a bigger job. Rodri does say he’s happy in the PL for now so it may be that he does the last year of his deal, or even stays, but it’s interesting that he’s still open to the idea of playing for Madrid (he always has been) after the Balon d’Or stuff.

The most obvious answer is that it's the lowest scoring season in 5 years. But more generally, FPL isn't really a proactive game, and the new scoring system has made an already passive game even more passive. We also can't ignore that a lot of people don't even know what DEFCON is. Some of the points feel unpredictable, but at the same time almost guaranteed, which ends up giving an advantage to models. And then you've got Opta updates, which don't always create a fair competitive field. I still think the game is enjoyable, but probably only if your enjoyment comes from the outcome.

In this week's FPL Pubcast, we are going to be discussing why many people are calling this the worst season in the history of FPL. Please help us by letting me know what, apart from DefCons, is "wrong "with FPL this season in your opinion (if that is your opinion!)?
