@Waffles_May @fakerylertowe The first two examples aren't Linux-exclusive, but of course someone arguing in bad faith would ignore that :)
English

@FamiuHaque @fakerylertowe Lmao imagine basing all your opinions on fucking Linux
You are just coping
English

@fakerylertowe > So how would you detect a Kernel level cheat without using a kernel level anti-cheat?
Server-side heuristics are one option, but not a silver bullet
> You are aware that both BattleEye and Easy anti-cheat both have Ring 0 access as well right?
Not on Linux they don't :)
English

@Waffles_May @fakerylertowe Defense Matrix (Overwatch 2), Valve Anti-Cheat (CS2, Deadlock)
BattlEye and EAC also don't require kernel-level access in Linux
Your next argument is that they 'don't work', yet these games seem to have a healthy playerbase. People aren't mass-quitting these games.
English

@FamiuHaque @fakerylertowe Lmao this is so braindead. There is not a singular anticheat that will work without kernel-level access
English

@TanethGG Your sentiment and mine are not incompatible. I agree, fuck cheaters. But also, fuck intrusive anticheat software.
English

@FamiuHaque If any of you commenting here cheats in any game I really hope your PC catches fire and burns down your house after getting vac banned and ip banned permanently.
FUCK CHEATERS.
Fuck anyone who supports them.
English

@FamiuHaque Completely fair, but I believe there is a world where both of those things are possible.
English

@FrutiLT @DeliciousOwl I didn't know it was forbidden to opine on anticheat unless you were a driver engineer. My apologies. I will attempt to obtain a PhD on the topic the next time I give my opinion on anything. It's not like I can be against the concept of intrusive software as a user, or anything.
English

@FamiuHaque @DeliciousOwl So are you knowledged on driver engineering? If you are then you can freely talk about Vanguard because you know your shit. If you just made a couple vim projects then it ain't shit son
English

@fakerylertowe Fair. I think our disagreement stems mainly from us having different priorities. You prioritize minimizing cheaters, I prioritize user privacy. So, agree to disagree.
English

@FamiuHaque My thing is, there are plenty of applications that have Kernel level access that have known vulnerabilities. Windows isn't perfect, but it has features that combat these vulnerabilities. The average person isn't making the switch to Linux, so we have to take those at face value.
English

@fakerylertowe I think that's a legitimate concern, one that needs to be solved. But I personally don't think giving away kernel-level access is an acceptable solution. It's like how putting security cameras on everyone's bedroom is one way of preventing crime, but not one that I'd accept.
English

@FamiuHaque I mean Linux doesn't change the fact that they're cheating, it just forces anti-cheat to run in user mode and not on ring 0, essentially handicapping the anti-cheat...
server-side heuristics could work, but what happens when the person is using ESP and not Aimhack?
English

@Skostnialy Adding on, I think community servers are a good potential solution. Communities tend to self-regulate. Players should be given the option to play without anti-cheat on community servers that don't require kernel-level AC and maybe have their own cheat detection mechanisms. [4/3]
English

@Skostnialy Even if I were to assume that kernel-mode AC required prevent cheating, I'd rather pick a game with cheaters than a game that uses kernel-mode AC. The issue isn't just that the anti-cheat has kernel-level access, but also that it's always on, even when you're not playing.

@pomnivlr @DeliciousOwl Ah yes look at this AI-assisted "Lua" code written in 2022 before even ChatGPT was released: github.com/neovim/neovim/…
You should maybe do a bit more research before making yourself look like a dolt.
English

@FamiuHaque @DeliciousOwl you write shitty ai assisted code in python and lua and think you understand kernel drivers
English

@FamiuHaque @besteropinions making strawman arguments isnt helping you. keep to topic or admit you were wrong.
English

@MeowingTism @besteropinions Let's say a car company releases a car that requires you to pay a subscription for access to essential functionalities, would you not find that outrageous? Or would you be fine with it simply because buying said car is optional? What if other car companies start following suit?
English

@besteropinions @FamiuHaque Its a Choice to play riot games. not forced. try again
English

@realGorillaTape @DeliciousOwl I never even played LoL or Valorant because I don't want a rootkit on my hardware. Try again.
English

@FamiuHaque @DeliciousOwl Bro you are literally mad you can’t cheat anymore lmao
English

@DeviousPL Yes but the ideal scenario is that you minimize the amount of entities you have to trust. If you use Windows, it's just Microsoft that you need to trust. If you use Windows AND play Valorant/LoL, now you have to trust Microsoft AND Riot Games.
English

@FamiuHaque So you have to hope they pay their own internal pen testers well and find any CVEs before the hackers so they can patch them. It’s no more or less risky than Microsoft releasing crappy vibe-coded Windows updates, which they seem to do too regularly.
English

@DeviousPL An intentional scandal isn't the only thing to worry about. In the worst case, an actual malware can take advantage of bugs in the game to hijack the anti-cheat and use the kernel-level access for malicious purposes, like what happened in the scenario with Genshin.
English

@FamiuHaque Yes, we can agree on that. I don’t like it either but consider it a necessary evil or I just don’t play that game.
I believe the risks are small because a big company isn’t going to jeopardise a major revenue stream with a scandal so that incentive keeps them in check.
