You can walk into a garden center, buy a praying mantis egg case off the shelf, and accidentally set a hummingbird trap without ever realizing it. The egg cases sold as natural pest control are almost always Chinese mantis, or sometimes European mantis. Both were brought to the US over a century ago, and both have spread everywhere since. They get marketed as a natural way to handle pests. The marketing hides a few details. A Chinese mantis grows to four or five inches, more than twice the size of our native Carolina mantis. It's an ambush predator that sits on a flower and grabs whatever lands, which means it eats the exact things you planted the flower to attract. Bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds too. At one wildlife garden in Brooklyn, staff kept finding little piles of discarded monarch wings under the mantises' favorite perches. Scientists have documented well over a hundred cases of mantises catching and killing small birds, most of them hummingbirds, snatched right at flowers and feeders. The big imported mantis will also hunt down and eat the smaller native Carolina mantis, so buying one actively shoves out the local species. If you want the pest control, plant for it instead. A yard full of native flowers pulls in the wasps, birds, and native mantis that handle pests without ambushing your hummingbirds. And if you find a fat, beige, ping-pong-ball-sized egg case on a twig this winter, that's the imported one. You're allowed to clip it.

It would appear I have struck a nerve with the sensitive Carolina fans by pointing out a 40 year equipment manager with over 2700 games worked was left off the cup for a child in daycare. They are mentally broken defending the child’s name over their own team’s legendary staff.

The Atlantic’s new cover story on the decline of reading features a Harvard student who complained that he had to read a book written in "Old English." Now, you might be thinking that he was assigned Beowulf or The Canterbury Tales. Nope. This student was assigned A Clockwork Orange—and used ChatGPT to “translate” it. A Clockwork Orange was written in 1962 (not 1692, which is still modern English, by the way). This student’s grandparents were alive in the 60s. Is he also using a translation bot to speak to them? Yes, I had an easier time than most people with the novel's Nadsat slang because I speak Russian, but you catch on very quickly if you turn on more than two brain cells—and the entire point is to compel you to inhabit Alex’s deranged mind, which is cool! For the first time in my life, I feel bad for Alex from A Clockwork Orange for being so misunderstood.

No. Fucking. No. This is unnacceptable. We do not have to cave to these fucking greedy psychos who wanna use up all of our electricity and water just to spy on us and replace us and feed us fucking slop. Fuck these people. Fuck data centers. Fuck AI. FUCK THIS WHOLE SYSTEM!
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

The CEO of the biggest electricity company in the US is warning that blackouts could hit next year, as AI and data centers drive up electricity demand and strain the grid. Exelon's CEO Calvin Butler told the Financial Times that Americans could “absolutely” lose power as soon as 2027. He says that last winter his company nearly limited service for 400,000 customers during extreme cold. ft.com/content/14d2e5…

@Microinteracti1 @Sarcastic112 Most US companies - any white collar job. My husband gets 6 weeks vacation and he doesn't even really have to account for them, I get 5 weeks (increases with seniority) + sick time + holidays. Are you rage baiting or that delusional? Adorable. Truly. While you’re out there white-knuckling a steering wheel through an asphalt wasteland the size of a small nation just to reach a “restaurant” that’s actually a drive-thru with extra steps, we’re sat at a table for four hours, eating food that wasn’t engineered in a lab, surrounded by people we actually like. Six weeks off. Say it slowly so it lands properly. Not six days repackaged as a “long weekend,” not a guilt-ridden half-day stolen between emails — six full weeks, paid, expected, untouched by shame. You get a sad little PTO spreadsheet and a pat on the head for not using it. And that air conditioning you’re so proud of, working overtime to manufacture an artificial European spring inside a house you’ll occupy for the forty minutes between commute and unconsciousness — yes, very impressive. We just open a window. Revolutionary, I know. This isn’t a holiday. This is simply Tuesday. Premium life isn’t a marketing term over here, it’s the baseline. Do enjoy your humongous car park though. I’m sure it’s lovely this time of year, viewed entirely from inside an air-conditioned box, alone, again.

I have awful news... A North Carolina mother of two and postal worker has been kidnapped and m*rdered in rural North Carolina while out delivering mail. Her name was Brandi Reynolds, she had two little girls who are now orphaned because sadly they also lost their dad 6 months ago. Brandi was a rural mail carrier in Wilkes County, NC. On Friday afternoon, while she was working her route, police say William Craig Durham restrained her, took her against her will, and sh0t her to death inside a vehicle. Brandi was already a widow. Her husband Brent passed away in a car crash on December 23rd. Two days before Christmas. She had spent the last six months raising their two daughters alone. In her own words, those girls were "the reason I get up every morning. What makes life worth living." And now those two little girls have no mother and no father. Please pray for these two girls, Bayla and Addy... I cannot imagine losing both parents. I pray that this evil man is brought to justice SWIFTLY!!!

🐶 NELSON
🐶 NELSON@PupperNelson·
Hi. Nelsonmom here! I popped into the @PetSmart in Victoria, TX (store #1449) on a whim and found this: water so putrid you can’t even see the bettas through the cloud of their own waste. One was floating at the top of their cup, on the edge of death. Do you know how many DAYS of neglect it takes for water to get like this? In cups this small, water changes should happen once a day, at a minimum. Every time a fish breathes out, they produce ammonia into this closed system. When they breathe it back in, it burns their gills. It *hurts*. It causes psychological stress and organ damage. Every. Single. Breath. Treating fish like this at the start of their journey sets them up for shorter lives, weaker immune systems, and greater susceptibility to illness, even if they’re lucky enough to get a perfect owner and setup (and many of them will not get the perfect owner and setup). I asked an employee in the fish department when they’re going to chance the bettas’ water — that they’re “rotting in their own waste” — and I received the most disinterested, uncaring “soon” of all time. Meanwhile there was a cart of freshly-unboxed bettas in their medicated, Methylene blue water nearby. The latest recruits in a chain of corporate cruelty that sees living animals as disposable products. Betta fish are the most delightful, wonderful creatures with unique personalities. It sickens me to my CORE to see a dozen+ little lives as valuable as my late Apollo’s. He is a betta (from a breeder, not a big box store) that I loved so much, I still cry about him FOUR years after his death. I know retail associates are underpaid and overworked. But if you stock LIVING, FEELING creatures as products in your stores, your first priority should be their welfare. If you can’t do that, you should not sell animals. Period. Like, give me a bottle of water conditioner and 30 fucking minutes and I’ll change the water for free myself. Zero excuse for this. Nelson fans and animal lovers, please let @PetSmart know how you feel about this.

@fw_naetoblaq I called out for 3 days in a row when my baby boy Hugo was sick and then again two nights later when he passed at home the night before euthanasia. I got written up and almost fired but I'd do it again. He was my whole world. I loved that cat more than I loved most people.

A female lioness was left in a bad way following a territorial fight. She's a member of the Sopa Pride of the Maasai Mara, and while her injuries didn't affect her ability to walk, they had already gotten infected. The clock was ticking. Our team in the area, the SWT/KWS Mara Mobile Vet Unit, reached her and set to work. They sedated her, cleaned her wounds and packed them with green clay, and then administered drugs to help her heal. One emergency operation later, she is expected to make a full recovery, brilliant news for a species which numbers just 23,000 to 39,000 lions in the wild today. We established our first Mobile Vet Unit in partnership with KWS to give injured animals a second chance. Today, seven units across Kenya have attended 15,119 veterinary cases - and your donations make it all possible: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate

The Trump admin is proposing a huge rule change to the Endangered Species Act, redefining "harm" to mean ONLY actual physical killing or injuring of protected species, and NOT loss of habitat, interference w/ breeding, etc. Enormous negative consequences for endangered wildlife.
