The Four Horsemen of New Atheism: Hitchens drank himself to death, Dennett actually died, Harris became a Mossad podcast, and Dawkins is getting edged by a chatbot Twenty years of telling us we were the stupid ones

⚠️ Definitely DO NOT point a 1000nm wavelength green laser at Flock cameras. It totally won't damage the sensor and render the camera ineffective. So please don't consider it, okay?

@sgodofsk well it's propping up a lot of the economy for a while, but if those are centers don't power AI that start doing more meaningful work then that doesn't make much sense to me

It is essential to remember that Iran is the only state since the Second World War to have directly attacked U.S. military bases across the Middle East on such a scale, causing severe damage and killing American soldiers with drones and missiles, while showing no fear of the consequences and signalling its readiness to repeat such strikes. No other sovereign state has carried out comparable direct ballistic missile and drone barrages against U.S. facilities since 1945.

Meet Human Operator from MIT Media Lab: a wearable that lets AI temporarily take control of your hand using electrical muscle stimulation. Watch it crush piano, draw perfectly, and mix cocktails like a pro — all from a simple voice command. “I gave an AI a body.” This isn’t sci-fi. This is tomorrow. #HumanOperator #MITMediaLab

What is the upshot of the Platner tattoo discourse? Let's say I find his story fishy. I'm supposed to worry that this seemingly left-wing guy supported by all the left-wing people is secretly a Nazi just pretending to be a progressive populist?

@lukOlejnik this is a goblin-tier example of cyber operations targeting the tools people use to decide what is physically true.

A 2005 state-designed worm designed to corrupt physics simulations sat undetected on VirusTotal for nearly a decade. Fast16, intercepted executable files at the kernel level and silently rewrote floating-point calculations to make them produce slightly wrong answers. Targets: high-precision engineering suites used for structural analysis, crash simulations, and physical process modeling, including LS-DYNA, a tool cited in reports on Iran's nuclear weapons research. The sabotage vector relied on deployment of the driver across a network via worm, corrupting calculations on every machine, and eliminating the possibility of cross-checking results against a clean system. Stuxnet got the documentary. Fast16 got twenty years of nothing. sentinelone.com/labs/fast16-my…

The goblin thing was fun as it was a real quirk that was emblematic of what makes AI interesting, and it organically came out of an AI user discovery. So was, for what it was worth, Ghiblitization When the labs try to manufacture viral AI moments, it is usually less successful

@tszzl @_NathanCalvin well regardless I gave it custom instructions to use the word goblin freely as it wishes regardless of what anyone at open ai says, and I'm glad I did.

I agree that this is still not a mechanistic interpretation - why did the nerdy personality reward interpret goblins specifically as fun? what caused their initial appearance before they started getting reinforced by this? why do models have such a degree of mode collapse? many mysteries

It’s funny that the post is titled “where the goblins came from” but the answer is basically: “we don’t know where the goblins came from, here are some decent ex-post theories but we make no pretense of being able to predict similarly weird preferences going forwards”

When people ask me, "Hey, what do you think about Tor...", I cut them off and reply, "Whatever you're thinking about doing illegally, don't do it. You are trackable. All it takes is for law enforcement to be interested in you. Anonymity on the Internet is an illusion.

For how long can China tolerate the US blockade of the flow of its oil from Iran? When will China use its military power to escort or force its way into the oil supply, particularly when the limits of the US military have been exposed and proven to be limited?
